For a long time I haven't read Mrs. Bradley's stories, and already after only the first few lines, I realized how much I had missed her!
The story of this novel takes up the cycle of Avalon and is a prequel to the more famous "The Mists of Avalon", telling the stories of three ladies of Avalon, Caillean (and the one who will succeed her, Sianna), Dierna and finally Ana and Viviana, mother and daughter.
As in all stories, there is an intertwining between what happens in Avalon and the outside world of the Romans and Saxons, the power struggles to conquer northern Britain, and then the loves between the Priestesses and the men of the external world, when love and sex are magic and power.
What leads me to love this writer for at least twenty years is her so fascinating representation of a world so far away from us, and above all these female figures so magical and strong and intelligent that it is difficult to find an equal in any other literary work. I am not a lover of fantasy, but in front of Marion Zimmer Bradley I drop every reservation and throw myself completely into her stories.

Last book bought before the closing of all bookstores and the lockdown, on a sunny Sunday morning. Although it was a book that I had wanted to read for a while, perhaps that is why it has been waiting for a few days, because it reminded me of the last days of "freedom", without self-certification and restrictions.
We find Penelope in the underworld, when she has already lived her whole life and can finally look back without fear of expressing her true ideas. She remembers everything, since when she was a fifteen-year-old girl married to Ulysses, her married life, her relationships with her mother-in-law, with her maids, with her son Telemachus. We see Ulysses, very good in the art of gaining everyone's trust; we see Helen, vain and arrogant; Telemachus, a boy who rebels against his mother. Very interesting is the part dedicated to the maids, the scapegoat of the queen's faults, used and then thrown away because slaves, of no importance. Penelope, however, one of whom I had an image of a strong woman, in this book is reduced to an eternal moaner, easy to tears. One who gets fooled by that bitch of Helen, and I agree with that representation, but I always imagined her as one who would have answered and put her back in two words.
There is Greek mythology, there is Margaret Atwood's pen, but I'm not sure that this book convinced me. Not just for this situation with Penelope, but in general. However, given the quality of Atwood, it is always a head above many others that convince me.

The Penelopiad

A book that has kept me very good company in quarantine, but one could say that there are several books one inside the other, perfectly mixed. The cover reads "The overwhelming story of a love and a century...", but more than the love story, what really conquered me about this book is the extraordinary story of a woman, Iris Chase, who at a superficial vision, she would have been seen as the classic trophy and lackluster wife of a powerful man. Iris is a powerful character, she lives through a historical period full of events and hers is a life to be told. I love her frankness, her rawness, her resilience.
There are several plans in this novel, there is the present, the past and a sci-fi fictional dimension. But everything fits perfectly to create a complete overall picture.
I thought several times during the reading how it was possible that Atwood hasn't yet won a Nobel Prize, because like her few others can write!

The blind assassin

This book is not a new reading for me, but a rereading of a book that I didn't remember reading and didn't know was the sequel to The Diary of a Good Neighbour. So, although it has never been moved from its place on the shelf of books, for me it is like a new book.
We find Janna, fiftyfive years old, her full life between working as vice director of Lilith, a forced cohabitation with the difficult granddaughter Kate, the commitments with the old women she takes care of.
But finally, someone seems to be coming for her too, a charming doctor named Richard. But he too has a life full of people...
Doris Lessing is a teacher in telling the life of women, the little things, even the feelings and drives that we are ashamed of. Very good at creating characters, from thoughts to small physical details, it's like seeing them perfectly represented in our heads. None of them are perfect, nobody is a hero or heroine of good feelings, and this is what makes them credible, albeit with this constant reference to the perfection of home furnishings and the impeccable style of dressing.
Obviously also because of the isolation imposed, I read it in two days, but I would have devoured it anyway, I put aside any other book I was reading to dedicate myself completely to this novel.
Wonderful. And now I'm kind of sorry to leave Janna and all the other characters.

If the Old Could

*****************************************************************************
Maudie and Janna are two women who couldn't be more different than that. Maudie is a ninety-year-old woman who lives alone, with a family who doesn't cares about her, is poor and arrange herself as much as she can. Janna is a forty-year-old rich woman and satisfied with her life, she is the vice director of a fashion magazine, she works a lot and she gives herself beautiful clothes, beautiful trips, beauty treatments, long restorative baths. In a normal world, two women like this would never cross. Instead, for some strange case of fate, Maudie and Janna meet and the younger one begins to take care of the older one and over time she also begins to love her, to become attached to her. Maudie is old and sick, Janna knows this very well. She also knows very well how proud and unpleasant she can be. Yet between the two there is a sincere feeling of friendship, of affection, between two women who want to decide on their life, but one of whom, although not recognizing it, needs help.
Doris Lessing tells in a perfect and sometimes ruthless way the world of elderly women, of their frailties and their strength, of how they deal with disease, old age, not being self-sufficient anymore. And it does so by comparing it with a mature woman, an independent woman, one who, however, also begins to feel loneliness and the first attacks of a body that begins to betray.
It is a book between the sweetness of sincere friendship and the brutal truth of a body that ages and falls ill.
I realized only at the end that it is a world entirely of women, where the only men represented are the doctors, distant, or the men of the past, husbands who very often die leaving their widowed wives. Because, as Lessing knows, in percentage terms, those who take care of the elderly, the caregivers, are mostly women. The opposite in the novel would have been forced and unreal.
I did not remember that "If the old could" was the sequel, as much as I read many years ago I will definitely take it back.

The diary of a good neighbour

I'm sure the Czech writer had a lot of fun writing this collection of short stories, that for him it was a divertissement...
I was reading the stories of these people and the only thing I could ask myself is how strong Kundera's reputation as a great writer must be for allowing him to write this stuff. There are seven stories, all focused on sex, about men who would do anything to do it and boast about it, and about women who when they are beautiful are to be conquered, sometimes to be subdued, while when they are ugly they are desperate women who would throw themselves on anyone.
Irritating characters and an irritation that spreads to the author.
The first edition is from 1968, still a world very different from what it is now, where this was perhaps the normality of relations between men and women. Or maybe, I hope, Kundera, that intellectual who he is, had already understood that there was something wrong and hence the ridiculous adjective. Or perhaps, more likely, they were trivial stories for him, because such light relationships were of little importance to him.
I don't know... honestly, the book left me quite disappointed with its author. I gave two stars because there are parts, important reflections, interesting ideas, worthy of an author often cited as one of the candidates for the Nobel Prize. But the remaining 90% of the book is hopefully forgettable.

Laughable Loves

Avrei dovuto farlo prima!

One of those books for which I've always felt awe. Composed of seven books, even if only for the length, it is not easy to decide to approach this reading.
But thanks to a lazy summer, and a sudden burst of desire for danger, I downloaded the first volume on my kobo and started.
I should have done it before! On page 200 I was already in love with his narrative, his writing style. How wonderful! A rich world, an ancient world, with its rules, its characters incredibly outlined with great perfection. There is no detail on which Proust does not pass over, everything is described in the individual details, and the reader can only let himself be enveloped by this world.
Not only the outside world, but the intimate world of the individual protagonists is complete. The first loves of the narrator, the first upsets. And consequently the ups and downs of the most experienced Swann, a man of the world, a friend of the Prince of Wales, and Odette, maintained and independent, in a game between the two of taking and leaving, of using and being used, by where neither of the two characters comes out immaculate.
The central part is certainly quicker to read, with the relationship between Swann and Odette, lighter, more worldly. While the autobiographical part remains with less action and more internal reflection.
Personally, I jumped into this reading, and I believe that I will not be able to abandon it until I am at the end of the seventh book. I am very curious to see how all the seven volumes will carry on the characters and the story, since only this first one alone seems absolutely full and dense to me!
In short, perhaps not really the typical summer reading, but an exciting reading, a true masterpiece, worthy of the name.
