E allora vediamoli meglio questi personaggi: Omar, il protagonista (anche se poi sono tutti protagonisti), non esattamente un uomo attivo, sempre bisognoso che qualcuno gli dia una spinta; al contrario la sua ragazza, Deirdre, personaggio antipaticissimo, che non vede l'ora di organizzargli la vita e un bel po' comandare. La famiglia Gund, specializzati nel non dare mai una risposta chiara a nessuno, preferendo giocare con le parole. Forse, tutti loro, non i migliori personaggi di Cameron, ho letto libri più belli. Però è un bel libro, si legge piacevolmente e scorre via fluido, come sempre.

The triggering event for the whole novel right away in the first pages: a letter from Omar Razaghi to the Gund's family. But let's start from the beginning: Omar is a researcher at the University of Kansas and has won a grant to write a biography of the writer Jules Gund, author of a single but highly acclaimed novel, "La Gondola". But to get the funding, the university requires that Omar obtains the formal approval of the heirs of Gund. And so we come to the attention of the Uruguayan side of the story. Jules Gund, in fact, lived in Uruguay with his wife, Caroline, the lover, Arden, the eccentric brother, Adam, and Adam's boyfriend Pete. Omar flies to the family villa, Los Ochos Rios, to obtain the wanted piece of paper, because the two women are a bit reluctant to give him the green light. And here, the story of the family, you lift a veil on the relationships between them. Because in the end, that is what this novel tells about, like all novels by Cameron: interpersonal relationships. Which in the end is the real life. This book gave me the impression of leaving it as an excuse the writing of the biography and emphasizes instead a lot more than the other novels the relationships between the characters, what they think, what they are.
So let's see more about these characters: Omar, the main characters (even though they are all main characters), not quite a dynamic man, forever needy of someone who pushes him; on the contrary his girlfriend, Deirdre, super-annoying, who looks forward to organizing his life and a little bit commanding. The Gund's family, specialized in never give a clear response to anybody, because they love playing with words. Maybe, all of them, not the best characters by Cameron, I definitely read better books by him. But it's a nice book, I read it pleasantly and it's flowing, as usual.
