As usual, the AbEditore stands out, at first sight, for the incredible care and beauty of the illustrations in these little books, real treasures for those who love the genre. Black and white, typeface, colour of the pages, everything is designed to make even more vivid the impressions derived from reading these stories.
It dominates the four stories, absolutely, that by Edgar Allan Poe who always manages to create small masterpieces. Schwob's one is inspired by Greek tragedies, the king wears a mask that covers his face and also hides the reality around him. Only the words of a Tiresias-like will finally reveal the truth to him. Meyrink's one is pure horror disguised as unbridled fun. Maupassant's one is a calmer and I would say delicate pause, under the mask there is no horror but not accepting the passing of time and the youth that goes away with its splendors.
Finally, as I have already said, that by Edgar Allan Poe who manages, always infallibly, to make me feel the shiver down my spine, to create the perfect combination of horror and madness.
As usual, AbEditore proves to be a master in creating small worlds in which to get lost and, at the same time, appreciate our return to reality.
