Pare che non sempre sia vera l'equazione che se ti piace un autore o un'autrice, come pensa, come ragiona, le sue idee, poi ti piace anche come scrivo.
Trovo Annie Ernaux una donna intelligente, una delle voci di intellettuale più interessante dei nostri tempi.
Ma questo romanzo... no.
Il tema è molto interessante, la vergogna vista con gli occhi di una ragazzina che si affaccia nel mondo, e come questo cambia il vedere se stessa, la sua famiglia, il mondo che la circonda. Il suo mondo, raccontato in prima persona, il confronto con le compagne di scuola, il rapporto dei suoi genitori, visto in rapporto con questo sentimento che la giovane Annie conosce dopo aver assistito a una scena particolarmente violenta tra i suoi genitori.
Quello che non mi è piaciuto e che mi ha reso pesante la lettura di quello che non è certo un libro corposo, è stato il modo in cui la storia viene raccontata. Una serie di liste che danno più l'impressione di una parte di scrittura non rivista dall'autrice, una attenzione spasmodica al dettaglio con la conseguenza di riempire il lettore di informazioni che contribuiscono ad appesantire la narrazione. Molto interessante la ricostruzione del mondo di figlia di bottegai, ma si perde un po'.
Insomma, avrei apprezzato un raccontare più fluido, meno attento a fermarsi sul dettaglio minore.
E' il primo libro che leggo della autrice francese, di sicuro ci saranno altre occasioni per rivalutarla.

It seems that is not always true the equation that if you like an author, how he or she thinks, the ideas, then you also like how he or she writes.
Annie Ernaux is an intelligent woman, one of the most interesting intellectual voices of our times.
But this novel... no.
The theme is very interesting, the shame seen through the eyes of a young girl who faces the world, and how this changes the way she looks at herself, her family, the world that surrounds her. Her world, told in first person, the confrontation with her schoolmates, the relationship of her parents, everything in connection with this feeling that the young Annie knows after having witnessed a particularly violent scene between her parents.
What I did not like and which made it difficult for me to read what is certainly not a substantial book was the way the story is told. A series of lists that give more the impression of a part of writing not reviewed by the author, a spasmodic attention to detail with the consequence of filling the reader with information that contributes to burdening the narrative. Very interesting is the reconstruction of the shopkeeper's daughter world, but it gets lost a bit.
In short, I would have appreciated a more fluid story, less careful to stop on the minor detail.
It is the first book I've read by the French author, certainly there will be other opportunities to reevaluate her.

Uno dei libri più attesi dell'anno, sicuramente attesissimo da me da quando ho saputo della sua uscita. Perché Il racconto dell'ancella, letto qualche anno fa, è stato uno dei libri più importanti che abbia mai letto, un insieme di emozioni devastanti che mi ha cambiata. A distanza di tempo sentivo ancora l'ansia per la storia, quella consapevolezza che questo mondo distopico non aveva niente di completamente inventato ma qualunque cosa è già successa, succede adesso in qualche parte del mondo, succederà. Un mondo completamente regolato, dove il corpo delle donne è assolutamente soggetto a delle regole che tolgono ogni diritto e ogni potere a colei che di quel corpo è l'unica proprietaria.
I testamenti riprendono dove era terminato Il Racconto dell'Ancella. Se in quel libro Gilead era al suo massimo potere e la vicenda ci veniva raccontata da donne che avevano vissuto il prima e si erano trovate costrette in questa nuova realtà, in questo nuovo libro questa visione così estremista va incontro alla sua fine, e possiamo vedere il punto di vista di una ragazzina che vi è nata e cresciuta, per cui Gilead è l'unico mondo che abbia mai conosciuto, con tutti i suoi errori è la sua casa. Gli altri due punti di vista sono di una ragazzina nata in Canada, e soprattutto di zia Lydia, la vera protagonista del libro, donna di grande astuzia e saggezza, che ha conosciuto il mondo come era prima ed è sopravvissuta, arrivando al vertice, grazie solo a se stessa. Per quanto parte di Gilead, non riesco a riconoscerla come una dei cattivi, ma come una che ha tramato nell'ombra e di cui solo alla fine viene riconosciuto il valore. Un personaggio enorme, di grandissimo valore.
Margaret Atwood riesce, a partire dalle testimonianze di queste tre donne, a ricostruire quel mondo e a creare un intreccio che vi terrà il fiato sospeso fino alla fine. Avrei davvero voluto non avere una vita in quei due giorni, potermi concentrare totalmente sulla lettura, perchè ne merita davvero la pena. Libro magnifico, vorrete divorarlo, per quanto l'ansia vi faccia battere forte il cuore nel petto.
Libro potente, un attesa che è stata ripagata mille volte.

One of the most anticipated books of the year, certainly awaited by me since I learned of its release. Because The handmaid's tale, read a few years ago, was one of the most important books I've ever read, a set of devastating emotions that changed me. After some time I still felt the anxiety for the story, that awareness that this dystopian world wasn't completely invented but whatever has already happened, it happens now somewhere in the world, it will happen. A completely regulated world, where the body of women is totally subject to rules that remove all rights and powers from the one who owns that body.
The testaments starts where The Handmaid's Tale was finished. If in that book Gilead was at its maximum power and the story was told to us by women who had lived a normal world before and found themselves forced into this new reality, in this new book this very extremist vision meets its end, and we can see the point of view of a girl who was born and raised there, for whom Gilead is the only world she has ever known, is her home even with all its flaws. The other two points of view are of a young girl born in Canada, and above all of Aunt Lydia, the true protagonist of the book, a woman of great cunning and wisdom, who has known the world as it was before and has survived, arriving at the top, thanks only to herself. Even as being part of Gilead, I cannot recognize her as one of the villains, but as one who has plotted in the shadows and whose value is only recognized in the end. A huge character, of great value.
Margaret Atwood succeeds, starting from the testimonies of these three women, to rebuild that world and to create a plot that will keep you in suspense until the end. I really wish I didn't have a life in those two days, so I could concentrate totally on reading, because it really deserves it. Magnificent book, you will want to devour it, as anxiety makes your heart beat faster in the chest.
Powerful book, a wait that has been repaid a thousand times.

L'origine degli altri, l'origine del razzismo. Possiamo discutere più o meno quanto lo siamo, ma lo siamo. Il mondo di oggi ci dà continui spunti per parlarne. Questo libro, del premio Nobel per la letteratura Toni Morrison, è una spiegazione chiara, esauriente e comprensibile. La Morrison parla principalmente del razzismo verso le persone di colore e negli Stati Uniti, ma è interessante e spunto di riflessione per tutto il mondo e per tutte le forme di razzismo, tra chi, come dice bene Ta-Nehisi Coates nella prefazione, è protetto dall'ombrello della società e chi invece no.
Non è un trattato lunghissimo, un centinaio di pagine, ma è denso di significato.
Una lettura che dovrebbe essere consigliata sempre, ma soprattutto in questo momento storico.

The origin of others, the origin of racism. We can discuss more or less how much we are racist, but we are. Today's world gives us constant startint points to talk about it. This book, by the Nobel Prize for Literature Toni Morrison, is a clear, comprehensive and understandable explanation. Morrison speaks mainly of racism towards people of colour and in the United States, but it is interesting and food for thought for the whole world and for all forms of racism, between those who, as Ta-Nehisi Coates rightly says in the preface, are protected by the umbrella of society and those who don't.
It is not a very long treatise, a hundred pages, but it is full of meaning.
A reading that should always be recommended, but above all in this historical moment.

The Origin of Others

Alan Bennett è forse uno degli uomini inglesi che maggiormente incarna il concetto di humour britannico. Potreste mettere la sua foto nell'enciclopedia per spiegare il concetto, e andrebbe benissimo. Le sue opere sono divertenti, ironiche, intelligenti.
In questo libro, non narrativo, Bennett racconta la sua famiglia partendo dalla malattia mentale della madre. Oltre alle storie dei genitori, due persone molto riservate, vi sono le storie di nonni e zii e zie varie, i loro amori, le loro avventure, i loro problemi. Uno spaccato di vita di una normalissima famiglia inglese dal periodo che va dalla guerra in poi.
Ho comprato questo libro perchè mi interessava sapere della malattia della madre, l'ansia e la depressione, volevo capire come un argomento così interessante potesse essere narrato dall'uomo che mi ha fatto fare mille risate con i suoi precedenti libri. Il risultato è un libro delicato, elegante, ma sempre con quel velo di ironia tipico della sua penna.
Davvero bellissimo.

Alan Bennett is perhaps one of the English men who most embodies the concept of British humor. You could put his picture in the encyclopedia to explain the concept, and it would be great. His works are funny, ironic, intelligent.
In this non-narrative book, Bennett tells his family starting by his mother's mental illness. In addition to the stories of the parents, two very private people, there are stories of grandparents and uncles and aunts, their loves, their adventures, their problems. A slice of life of a normal English family from the period that goes from the war and onwards.
I've bought this book because I was interested in knowing about the mother's illness, anxiety and depression, I wanted to understand how such an interesting topic could be told by the man who made me laugh with his previous books. The result is a delicate, elegant book, but always with that veil of irony typical of his pen.
Very beautiful.

Se c'è un autore contemporaneo a cui non so resistere, è Ian McEwan. Non ho aspettato la traduzione italiana di questo suo ultimo lavoro e per la prima volta mi sono cimentata in un acquisto su Amazon, per due motivi. Per primo, perché non avrei mai potuto aspettare. Volevo e dovevo sapere cosa aveva scritto, quali erano i temi su cui si era interessato di recente. E per secondo, il fatto che adoro la sua narrativa, amo le sue scelte lessicali, la bellezza e la levatura della sua scrittura.
Questo secondo punto l'ho ritrovato magistralmente in questo romanzo.
Siamo nella Londra degli anni '80, in un mondo molto diverso da quello che conosciamo. L'Inghilterra ha perso la guerra delle Falklands, la Thatcher viene sconfitta da Tony Benn, Alan Turing è ancora vivo, non essendo passato attraverso la castrazione chimica ma preferendo il carcere, ed è uno scienziato altamente rispettato e ricco. I suoi studi tecnologici e la libertà di uso per tutti che ha deciso, hanno portato alla creazione di una forma di intelligenza artificiale in un corpo assolutamente uguale a quello dell'essere umano. Una macchina con un cervello e un senso di sè.
Charlie, il protagonista e voce narrante, appassionato di tecnologia e con a disposizione una certa somma di denaro, decide di comprare una di queste macchine, gli Adam e gli Eve. Ed è così che il suo Adam entra nella sua vita e in quella della donna di cui è innamorato, Miranda. I due ne determinano insieme l'evoluzione del software, o per meglio dire, il suo carattere, per quanto Adam, essendo una macchina, ha dalla sua accesso a ogni informazione e a tutto lo scibile umano.
Cosa succede quando le macchine diventano come noi? Quando una macchina, con un cervello e una mente logica, una macchina che può provare emozioni ma rimanendo sempre una macchina, viene inserita a contatto e a confronto con gli esseri umani? La letteratura fantascientifica ci ha già detto che non è una buona idea. Ma è una idea magnifica questa di Ian McEwan, mettere a confronto la nostra morale, qualche volta sbagliata, a confronto con la logicità assoluta. Noi sappiamo che non tutto è nero o bianco, che ci sono delle sfumature nella vita. I bambini imparano giocando, noi umani facciamo delle scelte usando tutti i parametri, non solo cosa è giusto ma anche le nostre emozioni. Ma le macchine, come decidono?
Un libro meraviglioso, interessante, acuto, intelligente, come sono tutti i libri di Ian McEwan. Non mi aspettavo niente di diverso da uno dei più grandi scrittori viventi, per me il più grande.

If there's a contemporary author I can't resist to, it's Ian McEwan. I did not wait for the Italian translation of his latest work and for the first time I tried a purchase on Amazon, for two reasons. First, because I could never wait. I wanted and had to know what he had written, what were the issues he had been interested in recently. And second, the fact that I love his narrative, I love his lexical choices, the beauty and the stature of his writing.
This second point is masterfully present in this novel.
We are in the London of the 80s, in a very different world from the one we know. England has lost the Falklands war, Thatcher is defeated by Tony Benn, Alan Turing is still alive, not having gone through chemical castration but preferring prison, and is a highly respected and wealthy scientist. His technological studies and the freedom of use for everyone that he decided, have led to the creation of a form of artificial intelligence in a absolutely equal body to that of the human being. A machine with a brain and a sense of self.
Charlie, the protagonist and narrator, passionate about technology and with a certain amount of money available, decides to buy one of these machines, the Adam and the Eve. And that's how his Adam enters in his life and that of the woman he is in love with, Miranda. The two together determine the evolution of the software, or rather, its character, although Adam, being a machine, has access to every information and human knowledge.
What happens when the machines become like us? When a machine, with a brain and a logical mind, a machine that can feel emotions but always remaining a machine, is it brought into contact and compared with human beings? Science fiction literature has already told us that this is not a good idea. But it is a magnificent idea of ??Ian McEwan, to compare our morality, sometimes wrong, in comparison with absolute logic. We know that not everything is black or white, that there are nuances in life. Children learn by playing, we humans make choices using all the parameters, not only what is right but also our emotions. But the machines, how do they decide?
A wonderful, interesting, acute, intelligent book, as are all Ian McEwan's books. I did not expect anything different from one of the greatest living writers, for me the greatest.

Come sarebbe la nostra vita se, invece di concentrarci sui nostri sentimenti, sulle nostre esperienze emotive, su quello che sentiamo e pensiamo, ci concentrassimo sulla nostra "scatola", sul nostro corpo? La risposta ce la dà Mounsieur Pennac, con questo Storia di un corpo. Il libro parte con l'antefatto in cui l'autore ci racconta che la sua amica Lison, tornata a casa dal funerale del padre, si vede recapitare un pacco con una pila di quaderni. Quelli sono il diario del padre, scritto da quando è ragazzino fino all'ultimo giorno della sua vita. Un diario particolare perchè ci racconta tutto attraverso il suo corpo fisico. La fisicità che risponde alla realtà. E quindi attraversiamo la sua crescita, le prime esperienze sessuali, l'amore con la moglie Mona, il lavoro, i figli, la pensione, il crollo della vecchiaia.
E' presente il solito stile di Pennac, così delicatamente ironico. Ma è stato un libro in cui non succede granchè, e in certi punti l'ho trovato un po' lento tanto che ho avuto la tentazione di saltare le pagine, leggere un po' qui e po' là per farmi un'idea di quello che stava succedendo e arrivare in fretta alla fine.
Niente a che vedere con la saga Malaussene.
L'idea di un diario del corpo è interessante, del resto il corpo è noi, non possiamo dividere l'uno dall'altro, ma lo svolgimento, diciamo così, non è stato particolarmente appassionante. A 50 pagine dalla fine pensavo di dare due stelle, ho dato tre perchè comunque il finale è molto bello e coinvolgente.
Eh niente, adesso mi manca l'ultimissimo della saga, e posso dire di aver completato le mie letture Pennac-chiose.

How would our life be if, instead of focusing on our feelings, our emotional experiences, what we feel and think, we concentrate on our "box", on our body? The answer is given to us by Mounsieur Pennac, with this Diary of a body. The book starts with the background in which the author tells us that his friend Lison, having returned home from her father's funeral, finds a package delivered for her with a pile of notebooks. Those are the diary of his father, written since he was a boy until the last day of his life. A particular diary because it tells us everything through his physical body. The physicality that responds to reality. And then we go through his growth, the first sexual experiences, love with his wife Mona, work, children, retirement, the collapse of old age.
It is the usual Pennac style, so delicately ironic. But it was a book in which not much happens, and in some places I found it a bit slow so I was tempted to skip the pages, read a little here and there to get an idea of ??what was happening and getting to the end quickly.
Nothing to do with the Malaussene saga.
The idea of ??a diary of a body is interesting, after all the body is us, we cannot divide one from the other, but the development, let's say, was not particularly exciting. At 50 pages from the end I thought of giving two stars, I gave three because in any case the ending is very beautiful and engaging.
And now I miss the very last of the Malaussene saga, and I can say that I have completed my Pennac readings.

Per un lettore che la conosce superficialmente, Karen Blixen è famosa per il celeberrimo La Mia Africa, una sorta di diario in cui l'autrice danese racconta la sua vita in Kenya tra il 1913 e il 1931. Si era trasferita lì con il futuro marito, il cugino Bror von Blixen-Finecke, per acquistare un fattoria e vivere lì una nuova vita. Ancora adesso in Kenya si trova la casa dove visse, ora diventata un museo. Nel 1921 però divorziò e la grande crisi del caffè la portò, dieci anni dopo, a ritornare definitivamente in Europa.
