Invece, forse perchè più in basso di così non faceva ad andare, questo "Gente di Dublino" non mi è dispiaciuto. Anzi.
E' composto da 15 racconti che racchiudono l'intera esperienza del vivere umano: l'infanzia, l'adolescenza, la maturità, la vecchiaia e la morte.
Quello che accomuna tutti i racconti è il fatto che tutti i personaggi rappresentati sono in qualche modo dei falliti. L'ometto che vorrebbe una vita più interessante ma è chiuso in un matrimonio "borghese", l'ubriacone, la madre arpia, i procacciatori di voti. Sono tutte storie di povertà, di ambienti desolati.
Eppure ho apprezzato questo libro maggiormente. Storie interessanti, spaccati di vita realistici. Forse il racconto breve è più congeniale alla scrittura di Joyce, non gli dà il tempo di sperimentare (e rovinare) troppo.
Insomma, stavolta ha passato la prova... ma può ancora migliorare!

After my very bad reading experience with the Ulysses, I was a bit hesitant to deal with Joyce another time. One of the worst books I've ever read, a so heavy stuff, a real struggle.
But, maybe because lower than that is impossible, I didn't dislike this "The Dubliners". On the contrary.
It's made by 15 short stories telling about the entire life path: childhood, adolescence, maturity, old age and death.
What these stories have in common is that every character is somehow a loser. The little man who would like to live a more interesting life but it's stuck in a conventional marriage, the drunkard, the mother shrew, the brokers. These are stories of poverty, of desolate times.
But I appreciated this book more than the more famous one. Interesting stories, slices of real life. Maybe the short story is more suitable to Joyce, it doesn't give time to experiment (and spoil) too much. So, this time he passed the test... but he can improve more!
