3 stelle

It happens regularly that I pick up a collections of horror stories, whether they are by classical authors or by contemporary authors.
This Scary stories to tell in the dark has, let's say, a more playful background, as they are very short stories that are used to play and scare friends during the nights together, and in fact it is often recommended to suddenly grab their arms or scream, to increase the surprise effect.
This edition is a collection of the three books, so some stories and some references repeat themselves, proof of the fact that, as often happens in different literary genres, the stories are based on those cornerstones from which one draws and then develops in a personal way, a bit like in music that the musical notes are seven and from there we start to create songs of all kinds!
I must admit that although it is a very nice collection, it is not one of the best I have read, pleasant for a few evenings but no more...
Considering that I read it in the first days of the year, in those sleepy days between New Year's Eve and Epiphany, nothing too demanding but certainly not sleepy, on the contrary, it keeps the attention well alive, I would say that it has done its job very well!

I bought this book because piracy is a fascinating subject and I like history books. I must say that, after reading, I continue to like history books but maybe next time I'll try something that, besides being fascinating, really interests me!
Don't get me wrong, the book is very nice, full of a lot of stories and details... it's just that after a while they were all the same to me and a bit boring! Aside from a few parts and the chapter on pirate women, I wasn't excited about it.
In short, let's say that more than anything else it's my fault that I chose a book on a subject that is not so much in my heart ... but I still learned something new and discovered the figure of Grace O'Malley, the Irish pirate, very charming figure!

Life Among the Pirates: The Romance and the Reality

The book starts with the beginning of the friendship between Laura, the narrator, and Alina. Laura is a childfree and has had a tubal closure operation to secure her choice. Even Alina at the beginning of their friendship is a childfree but when she meets Aurelio and they go to live together, they decide to have a child. After many attempts, Alina finally gets pregnant but unfortunately the baby has a brain malformation and she will unlikely survive the birth. Meanwhile, Laura meets Nicolas, son of her neighbour Doris, a mother and a son with a family background that is certainly not easy... to complete the protagonists, perhaps less present than the other two, the mother of Laura, a woman who was initially very conventional but who will find herself more open to the different choices of women later in life.
I see myself very much in Laura, at our age it is normal to be surrounded by friends with children and having to deal with each other's children is everyone's experience. But I appreciated less that, even in this book, it is still remarked that even if you don't have any and you don't want any, you will still find yourself taking care of a child, as if it were a destiny that cannot be escaped. It's pretty different to deal with them and have to actively take care of them, almost a vice-mother.
In this novel, motherhood is not addressed like the ones in an advertisement, it is the difficult one, the one in which love is not enough, the one made up of violence, battles, illness. The author does it with a very simple, very fluent narration, of the kind that one starts and finishes reading the book in one evening, it is so easy to read it, as if it were a diary.
I gave three stars a little bit for the above motivation, and a little bit because I found the ending really bad, just because it had to be finished but it was chosen to finish it in the worst possible way, an ending that it has nothing to do with the rest of the book, it could very well have been avoided.
Who knows, I probably would have carried it on for a few more pages, so it seems to me that something is missing.
