Adesso spiego come mai.

After Sapiens by Yuval Noah Harari, I can say that I want to read every single book that explain world history in a few pages and referring to the general framework. After the quarantine, this was the first book I bought once the bookstores reopened but I ended up reading the other book first. I must say that between these two, both very great and very interesting, I slightly prefer that of the Israeli historian. Now I explain why. Diamond explains the differences between the different corners of the world based on three simple points: weapons, steel and disease. Whoever has these three elements on their side (and a better resistance to the above) wins. Obviously it seems very simple and in fact Diamond's speech is much more complex, going from ecological, economic, geographical reasons... the book is really full of explanations of the reasons why, for example, Holland, a land with a geographical situations that did not seem to favor it, its per capite income is one hundred times greater than that of Zambia, which has better climatic conditions.
The explanations of the different situations of the different nations in the world are so diverse and specific that it would be impossible to cover them all in this book. But it provides an overall picture, broadly speaking, absolutely interesting.
The reason why I preferred the other book, but for which I completely take the blame, is that the explanations especially on livestock and agriculture in different parts of the world are very specific and very analyzed in individual details, and so... every now and then I got lost in the minutiae. Again, totally my fault and my limited attention span. This won't stop me from reading his other books and also those of Harari, these two, moreover, know and respect each other.

Guns, Germs, and Steel: The Fates of Human Societies

Tantissimo.

What is in this book isn't certainly new to me. I was already fully aware that ours is a male-shaped world. But it is always very impressive to read such an accurate and vast collection on many different themes and to see that for each of these themes, the female world is always considered less than the male one. Not even in what should be taken for granted: did you know that in some parts of the world, after catastrophic events that caused the destruction of houses, they were rebuilt without a kitchen? Did you know that in countries like Bangladesh, women cannot leave the house without a male chaperone, and that in the event of climate disasters they not only waste precious time waiting for someone to accompany them out of the house, but that they don't even know they are in danger until someone goes to warn them? Closer to us, did you know that car crash tests are conducted with mannequins with the average male size? But just the fact that female anatomy and "normal" anatomy are studied in medical faculties is enough for us to understand that the women are other than the paradigm, we are different. They don't understand us not because we are strange, but because it is too tiring and expensive to collect data about us, and that is why it is easier to say that we are not understandable. One thing that the author of this book isn't tired of repeating is that data on women in all fields are few and very often not even taken into consideration.
This book represents an important step in the awareness of the place of the women in the world and of how much work there is still to be done. A lot.

I realized that the only idea I had about Frankenstein was that it was the name of the monster and that he was somehow the servant of the one who created him. Now that I've finished reading, I've realized that I know absolutely nothing about the book I'm talking about.
First of all, Dr. Frankenstein is the one who gives life to the monster, the creator and not the creature.
Then the story is so compelling and impressive that it's impossible to do  justice in a review.
The aspect that most struck me was certainly the psychological analysis of the two protagonists. The last page leaves the reader wondering who was right, who was the victim and who the executioner. The points of view of both are widely explained by the characters and are coherent, interesting, true. The monster is no longer a monster, his morality is sensible, his thinking consistent. We enter his head and we cannot help but be fascinated by it.
All this in a gothic and horror book, with its load of fear.
Add me to those who have read it and who consider it a great masterpiece, with good reason.

Probably one of the most discussed books in recent months, the protagonist of an intense debate especially in the United States, after Hachette's decision not to publish it after the protest of its employees. Currently, the book is published in English by Arcade Publishing and in Italian by La nave di Teseo.
Apropos of nothing, it concerns the entire private and working life of the New York director, from his beginnings as a joke writer and stand-up comedian, first as a director and for the weddings and the relationship with Diane Keaton, and then with Mia Farrow. And then, finally, Woody Allen's point of view on the sexual assault allegations against Mia's adopted daughter, Dylan, and on the relationship, which later resulted in a long and happy marriage, with Soon-Yi. I must say that since the case came out I had read the points of view of Mia Farrow and her son Ronan more, probably because they are the ones who have been most exposed while Woody Allen has never talked about what happened, also because the two investigations conducted, complete with lie detector and investigations, have both completely cleared the director's name.
If like me you are passionate about Allen's work and appreciate his humour, this is a read not to be missed. Funny from the first three lines, interesting, full of anecdotes about his life, about the people he worked with, about all of his films. A lot of space is obviously dedicated to his wife Soon-Yi for whom he has many beautiful words and many small, very funny and affectionate pricks.
The title is Apropos of nothing but in these almost 400 pages there is a lot!
Allen makes fun of himself a lot but what I read is the autobiography of an intelligent man with a very disenchanted spirit. Evidently, in his case, psychotherapy works very well!

I needed something light to read, something that didn't bore me. Having read other books by this author and appreciating him a lot, I thought I'd give it a chance.
It was certainly a light reading, perhaps a little too much...
The character that connects the others is Robin, who graduated from Cambridge four years ago and is now struggling with the never finished and probably never started thesis of a doctorate, but above all struggling with a period of his life of solitude, of not knowing where we are and what to do, with a completely uncertain future in front of us and a past with a disappointment of love from which he still cannot get away. That touch of love is what he doesn't receive from those around him, even a pinch would be enough... and it is yet another personal disappointment that leads him to an extreme choice.
The book is divided into chapters interspersed with Robin's short stories, where we better understand his personality.
Even if the main theme of the novel is interesting, I found the book too light, not deep enough in the analysis of the characters, a story that remains superficial. Let's say that Coe, especially with the Rotters' Club series, got me used to something better!

A Touch of Love

A short story, but very funny and very intelligent, as we are used to thanks to Daniel Pennac.
Dr. Galvan tells about the night when, in the emergency room, he meets the case of his life. A man from whom you can only know that "I don't feel so good", just this, and with various symptoms attributable to different diseases. From here starts the story of an incredible night, of absurd encounters, of memorable scenes up to the end that alone is worth the book.
Not even a hundred pages, you can read in a short time also for the super fast pace, but memorable, guaranteed fun. Daniel Pennac's pen in its full glory.
