*******************************************************************************
The book with which I closed the 2020 and I could not expect anything better than a collection of short stories written by my beloved Doris Lessing.
The eleven short stories in this book, as the title already says, are all set in Rhodesia, present-day Zimbabwe, where Doris Lessing spent her early years. Although they are stories in their own, they perfectly depict the social situation of that land, where whites are the masters of the land, who manage and where they live, and blacks, who are native to that land, forced to serve. Yet, there is a respect from the author in telling the life of blacks, especially in the story The Old Chief Mshlanga, in which, for example, the protagonist feels she has no right to request that this man would set the street free for her. The same whites, masters of the lands, are told in their insecurities, in their daily battles, in their meanness.
What struck me most is the atmosphere that pervades the novel, this Africa full of an opaque light, almost sandy I would say if there is a way to say it, a warm light... in a brutal world.
Doris Lessing closes my 2020 with a perfect short story collection.
