Senza Kobo, ovviamente.

I did not think this book had followed me for so many months. Yet I realize that he stayed in my bedside table for three months. The explanation, however, is simple: I read a certain number of pages every so often, because being quite repetitive as a diary I did not want to get bored, and so I could fully enjoy it.
Shaun Bythell is the owner of The Bookshop, a bookstore that sells used books in Wigtown, Scotland. In his diary he tells the daily life of a bookseller, the most bizarre clients, but the assistants are definitely not less, and especially the job itself: collect and select the most interesting books from sellers, sell through Amazon and other sites, organize the festival of Wigtown, the relationship with ebooks.
The book is not only interesting but it is also a lot of fun. I'm afraid to fall into two of the most hated categories by Shaun Bythell: not only am I a librarian, but I've read his book via Kobo ... knowing what he thinks about Kindle, I think I can thank the fate that has placed my precious gadget away from the bookseller!
Also, and here I add a personal note... although I've never been there, I have always had a certain fondness for Scotland. It's a place I've read so much about, occasionally for personal interest I also try to learn Scottish Gaelic but unfortunately I never went beyond the first lesson. In short, to read this book, to know that it was there, occasionally spilling out a reference to some locality, well, there were so many small sips of a place dear to me, even from afar. One day, who knows, I will get there... and one of the stops will for sure be Wigtown. Without Kobo, of course.

The subtitle of this book is the exact summary: Story of my body. This is the story of Roxane Gay's body. The story of a twelve-year-old girl who is raped by the boy she thought she loved, and who starts eating because the more she grows the more she feels safe, feels protected, feels strong.
But the body that acts as its protection is the same that makes it a prison. Roxane can not keep up with her friends without getting tired, she hates chairs with armrests, she hates not finding anything nice to wear.
I deeply loved this book. I could not get away until the end. And although her story, on a superficial level, does not reflect my own, I found many points in common. I loved her honesty, her irony, her sincerity. It is not an easy book to read, it is a hard, honest book on the verge of brutality. You wish you could hug Roxane, tell her that she's worth 100,000 times more than the asshole that hurt her so much, he and all his friends. Tell her that in spite of everything, she is intelligent, ironic, an excellent communicator, an interesting person. And she's beautiful. I follow her on Instagram and there is no photo in which I don't see a woman with a beautiful smile and a beautiful face, a woman who sparks intelligence, kindness and irony.
Then you remember that you read that she does not love hugs, and above all that I never met her in my life, and then hope that this review is enough to send all your support.

Viene sepolto all'Edson Cemetery a Lowell, nel Massachusetts.

E lei continua a crederci.

Every book brings out something of what we are. In my case, it brought out a strong reflection on relationships. I say it strong, because reading about the relationship of Lorenzo and Lidia I felt many times the instinct to take her, give her a resounding slap and ask her "Do you want to wake up?". Maybe because I'm no longer a girl and for the charm of beautiful and damned I feel only great pity. A character like Lorenzo, narcissus, self-centered, selfish, indifferent to everything, immature, one with great speeches and few facts, with me would have a very short life. Because unlike Lydia, incredibly masochistic, at the second lie I leave. Because I do not want to waste time in a relationship so sick and self-destructive. They are both two immature, and masochists.
I gave a star not so much for the writing of Mrs Gamberale, which I appreciate. Besides, I did not finish the book because the doctor recommended it to me, but because I like it as she writes. But I gave a star to these two characters that made me just want to take them individually and make them a telling off, because in a story like this you stay only if you're immature and you have no kind of love and respect to yourself. And when it happens that both are like this... you end up in a book called The Blind Zone.
Lidia would be even more rational, but ends up believing continually and desperately to this so wrong man. Wrong man who is honest with her from day one, tells her plainly that he is a piece of shit. And she continues to believe in him. Now, dear Lidia, I understand that you are in love but the understanding of the text is not really part of you.

Now I would like to talk a bit about this open ending, so I invite those who do not want spoilers to stop here.

She is pregnant with another man and has finally decided to break off with him. She leaves his house and moves to her friend Toni's house, where she will wait for her new house to be ready.
He went looking for Brian, the shaman with whom he feels a strong spiritual connection. He sends him an email where he tells him that he finally feels determined to go and live with Lidia in the new house.
The fact is that Brian does not exist, it is a creation of Lydia. And Lidia will receive that mail. What will happen?

Actually the ending is not open, because we know how the story goes on. Because the Gamberale tells us in that book that is The lights in the houses of others. Book that I will not read, because now I know how it continues, and that Lidia has taken the wort decision she could take.
And of course I gave this book one star.

I had not read anything by Fallaci for a long time. I think the last book I have read was Anger and Pride, but it was also probably the wrong time because I abandoned it.
This collection of interventions by the Florentine writer, of lectures around the world, was my way of reconnecting with her.
One can disagree with her thinking, but the power she transmits, the political and journalistic passion, that is undeniable.
What an extraordinary woman!
There are six speeches in which she talks about journalism, politics, rights and freedom, her companion, the Greek revolutionary and poet Alekos Panagulis, who died in a mysterious car accident.
Six interventions of great strength and passion. Only by reading those words, surely subjected to careful study to make them pleasant and in  metric, one feels its beauty and strength.
Six great interventions from a great woman.

I am always sorry not to give the highest marks to books or collections of stories published for charity. I'm sorry but I must also be honest with the readers of my blog.
The common denominator of these stories is to have a character definable just like a heart of stone. Be it a lover, a family member, a work colleague. There are stories with a happy ending and some less. I was very impressed by the story of Tiziana Ferrario, set in Afghanistan. And those of Loredana Lipperini and Laura Toscano, which I found poetic. The one of Geppi Cucciari made me laugh a lot, like that of Barbara Garleschelli about Snow White, although I found this last one not totally apt.
But apart from these, the others are pages that have left me almost nothing.
In short, there is some very good but also a lot of meh.
And that's why I decided to give the half-vote.
An interesting collection of stories, with some higher points. Not more.

I know Benedetta Craveri of course for her most famous book, Lovers and Queens. I do mea culpa, I put it long ago in the list of books I want to borrow to the library... and it's still there. Not because I do not care, but because probably lost in other readings, with other books in backlog, the right time has never come.
Then recently, during a walk in the bookstore, I stumbled upon this little book and I could not resist.
The historian tells about a fact that actually happened at the French court: a scam orchestrated by a lady fallen into disgrace, whose sole purpose was to return to possess her riches confiscated by the Crown. The necklace is the medium through which Madame de la Motte thinks of succeeding, putting in the middle not only the Queen Marie Antoinette but also the Cardinal Rohan, counting on the fact that the queen did not address the word to the latter and that he suffered greatly.
The queen discovers it, it all ends in a trial, but it will not get the desired result, but rather the opposite: the reputation of Marie Antoinette, already proven, comes out even worse. And this will be one of the ingredients of the cauldron that will lead the people to counter the divine ancestry of royalty and the French Revolution.
Benedetta Craveri tells the story in all its details, with the accuracy of the historical, but making it interesting as a novel.
We relive the splendor of the French court, the ceremonial and internal relations between the royals and their retinue, mostly unscrupulous people who would have done anything to rise in rank.
Short book, 87 pages, but incredibly interesting!
