Io ho un problema con Franzen. Apprezzo la sua scrittura, riconosco le sue doti letterarie. Ma non è uno di cui vorrei leggere tutto quello che scrive, spesso e volentieri mi annoia e a volte lo trovo anche vagamente supponente. Ho letto altre volte di questo ultimo punto quindi immagino di non essere l'unica a pensarlo...
Prendete questa raccolta di saggi. Scritti benissimo, già solo quello sulla crociera in Antartide vale il libro ed è responsabile delle tre stelle (sarebbero state due). Idem per quello all'indomani della tragedia delle Torri Gemelle. Ma poi ci sono pagine e pagine sugli uccelli, abbiamo capito, Franzen è appassionato di bird watching, abbiamo ampiamente capito, ma io no quindi le ho bellamente saltate.
E' sicuramente una raccolta di saggi importante per questo momento perchè il tema cardine è l'ambiente e i cambiamenti climatici. E' un tema che gli sta a cuore e di cui parla approfonditamente e appassionatamente... sì, anche a proposito degli uccelli. Di sicuro è uno che si è informato sul tema ed è preoccupato quanto una persona dotata di raziocinio dovrebbe essere in questo momento.
Insomma, il libro è scritto benissimo ed è interessante. Sono contenta di averlo letto. Ma ancora, non rientra negli scrittori che mi accendono la scintilla. Non penso comunque che non ci dormirà la notte...

I wanted to read this collection of Franzen's essays for quite some time and so I took advantage of the ebook loan from my library.
I have a problem with Franzen. I appreciate his writing, I recognize his literary skills. But he isn't one of those I would like to read everything, he often bores me and at times I also find him vaguely opinionated. I've read about this last point before so I guess I'm not the only one who thinks this.
Take this collection of essays. Very well written, the one on the Antarctic cruise alone is worth the book and is responsible for the three stars (there would have been two). Ditto for the one after the tragedy of the Twin Towers. But then there are pages and pages about birds, we understand, Franzen is passionate about bird watching but I don't so I skipped them.
It is certainly an important collection of essays for this moment because the key theme is the environment and climate change. It is a topic that is close to his heart and which he talks about in depth and passionately... yes, even and especially when he's speaking of birds. He is certainly one who has learned about the subject and is worried about it as much as an intelligent person should be at this moment.
In short, the book is very well written and interesting. I'm glad I've read it. But still, he doesn't fit into the category of writers who ignite the spark. However, I don't think he won't sleep at night because of this...
