Dopo quasi un mese, sono finalmente arrivata a completare la lettura di questo romanzo. Ne avevo tanto sentito parlare bene e mi affascinava l'idea di una storia di maghi inglesi a inizio Ottocento.
In un'era in cui la magia è solo teorica e noiosa e viene studiata su dei libri, e la magia pratica è roba da vagabondi e gente stramba, arrivano prima Gilbert Norrell e poi Jonathan Strange, con i loro poteri, a riportare la magia nella vita degli inglesi!
Per quello che riguarda le mie personali letture, quello che c'è di diverso rispetto ai soliti romanzi su maghi e magia è che i due protagonisti sono due rispettabilissimi gentleman, dalla solida reputazione e un buon reddito, con grandi case in campagna e servitori e ovviamente, biblioteche ben fornite di libri di magia. I due, come farebbero tutti i maghi borghesi, si mettono al servizio dei ministri del governo inglese, per loro combattono Napoleone e addirittura Strange viene mandato a seguire Lord Wellington contro l'esercito francese. Ovviamente ogni mago ha bisogno di una profezia e di un nemico... vedremo in quale modo i due, pur diversissimi nei modi e nelle idee, affronteranno la sfida!
Lo sfondo di questo bel quadretto di borghesia, fortunatamente, è però l'unica cosa "banale" nel libro... per il resto, abbiamo grandi feste e balli notturni, gentiluomini dai capelli lanuginosi, re pazzi e soprattutto, donne e persone di colore che non sono semplici figure di contorno!
E' un libro davvero scritto bene, interessante, con bei personaggi, bella trama... ma è anche molto lungo e in alcune parti moooooolto lento! E' che è davvero bello però in alcuni momenti ho avuto bisogno di tutta la mia determinazione per andare avanti! Tra l'altro, ci sono anche tantissime note a fine capitolo con altre storie legate al mondo di Strange e Norrell... un approfondimento dei temi e dei personaggi nominati tra i protagonisti, diciamo così, interessanti ma potete tranquillamente saltarli, non lo dirò a nessuno!
Un finale complesso e degno di questo romanzo, devo dire che mi ha soddisfatta, non il tipico finale.
Insomma, sono contenta di averlo letto ma adesso, come capita dopo tutti i mattoni, mi dedicherò a qualcosa di più corto!

After nearly a month, I have finally finished reading this novel. I had heard so much about it and I was fascinated by the idea of a story of English magicians in the early nineteenth century.
In an era where magic is only theoretical and boring and is studied in books, and practical magic is the stuff of wanderers and weirdos, first Gilbert Norrell and then Jonathan Strange, with their powers, come to bring back the magic in the life of the British people!
As for my personal readings, what is different from the usual novels about wizards and magic is that the two protagonists are two very respectable gentlemen, with a solid reputation and a good income, with large houses in the countryside and servants and of course, well-stocked libraries of books about magic. The two, as all bourgeois magicians would do, put themselves at the service of the ministers of the English government, they fight Napoleon for them and even Strange is sent to follow Lord Wellington against the French army. Obviously every magician needs a prophecy and an enemy... we will see how the two, although very different in ways and ideas, will face the challenge!
The background of this nice little picture of the bourgeoisie, fortunately, is the only "trivial" thing in the book... otherwise, we have big parties and night dances, downy-haired gentlemen, crazy kings and above all, women and people of color that are not mere outline figures!
It's a really well written, interesting book, with nice characters, nice plot... but it's also very long and in some parts soooooo slow! It's really nice but in some moments I needed all my determination to go on! Among other things, there are also many notes at the end of every chapter with other stories related to the world of Strange and Norrell... a deepening of the themes and characters who the protagonists talked about, let's say, interesting but you can safely skip them, I will not say to anybody!
A complex and worthy ending to this novel, I must say that I was satisfied, not the typical ending.
In short, I'm happy to have read it but now, as happens after any big book, I will dedicate myself to something shorter!
