Bellezza pura.

The most beautiful book I've had in my hands in a lot of time. Beautiful because its contents, and mostly because the visual sense. Extraordinary pictures, places of such a beauty that fills up eyes, heart and soul.
A journey in the libraries, from the ancient Mesopotamia to today. Architecture, art, literature, all together to create that heart of culture called library.
From the Eastern simplicity, to the Rococo, from the study halls of Oxford, paper and wood, to the super modern ones of today, made of shelves of iron and steel, with their heights as far as the eye can see.
I must admit, pleasing to the touch. I think it is the most caressed book in the world. Every page had a caress and a lot of love.
I can't thank enough the authors for this.
Pure beauty.

The Library: a World History

Is it possible that I like a novel in which I find unpleasant three of the four main characters? Well, it would be three and a half, because one appears and then disappears.
But I enjoyed a lot, devoured in a weekend. Maybe because the narrator is also the only character I like. Douglas is a scientist who works for a huge corporation. He's serious, conscentious, organized, a bit boring. Connie is his wife. She is an artist, jaunty, funny, always ready for new adventures, more compliant with their son Albie, young man with the appearance of a rebel looking for who he is, but using his father's money. Last, Kat, street performer.
It's the last summer of Albie at home before his studies abroad. In honor of his art studies, his parents organize a trip around Europe along the same lines of the nineteenth-century Grand Tour. And I must admit, this is the reason why I picked this book. Cities of art, museums, culture and beauty, the dream of my life. I think I was a rich english descendant in my last life, a lot of things would find an explanation. Opposite to me, Albie is not very happy. More, Connie has told to Douglas that she is thinking about divorce. And him, man of science, makes any attempts to get back his life, during their last trip together.
A funny novel, well written, set in the most beautiful European cities. I shamelessly supported Douglas from the first page till the end. And if he wants repeating the Grand Tour, I'm in.

Yeong-hye, definita all'inizio del libro come insipida, anonima.

A surreal book, one of those leaving you speechless, thinking that writing books isn't for anyone because talented people as Han Kang is rarely born. A book that catches your stomach and your brain, never letting you go. Devoured in one weekend. A magnetic writing.
Divided in three parts, the first one narrated by the main character's husband, the second by the point of view of her brother in law, the third by the her sister's one.
The main character, so. Yeong-hye, in the first pages called insignificant, featureless. A wife who gives no problems. Good cook, wise woman, a good daughter of a conventional South Korea. Then one day, she has a dream, and she becomes vegetarian. Nothing works to make changing her mind, not the protests and the threats of her husband and her family, every kind of meat is refused. That good korean wife is now different, rebel. And she, and us readers with her, starts a journey, a comeback to the most extreme naturalness, a will of being tree and air.
It's a book that probably just an Eastern Asian could write. In between reality and dream, carnality and immateriality. The body and mind of this woman who in consuming herself draws on her the other characters, subverting their life.
A magnetic book, original, powerful.

E stiamo già rischiando fin troppo adesso.

What will it take to make a woman president?

You know, when I don't like something, or I don't understand it, don't accept it, I look for an answer in books.
As you had already understood, the election of Donald Trump has been a very serious blow. One of the countries I love the most, where I lived for a while and I left a piece of my heart, in the hands of a man of ambiguous morality.
What did Hillary do wrong? Why, being a million times more experienced, competent and intelligent than him, she hasn't been able to win against the most unpresentable candidate in the history of presidential elections? So, what will it take to (finally) make a woman president?
The answers to Marianne Schnall are from men and women, democrats and republicans, working in politics and media, writers, Facebook's COO. Nancy Pelosi, Maya Angelou, Gloria Steinem, Sheryl Sandberg, just to mention the most famous ones. Considerations about why there is still an unbelievable disparity between women and men in politics, why the path looked open with Barack Obama but still women are out of this, why women haven't that further incentive, why the USA, country of freedom and self realization, hasn't yet have a woman president. Of course Hillary's name has been made in almost every interview, as who was the most likely future elected. The books has been written at the aftermath of the Obama's second mandate, so after 2012... and the rest is recent history.
The reasons why it didn't happen yet and the suggestions about which qualities have to be more relevant are all absolutely reasonable and full of common sense. But... would be the pessimism following this election... we are told we are good, to work as a team, to believe in ourself... and then a troglodyte with zero experience and unclear affairs in his past wins. Smites even the best of us. And this is a too hard blow. Because you can talk how much as you want about the better and winning "weapons" of a woman in politics. And so, what happened? Still it's not enough. Not even Hillary. But this time is too much. As woman, even not American, I feel outraged by what happened. Because in here it's no more about women and men, but meritocracy thrown to nettles.
The people's mind, of who votes, must change. Because this abomination mustn't happen again. And we are already in danger.

What will it take to make a woman president?

Grazie signor Llosa. Potessi, le darei un altro Nobel.

In the aftermath of Donald Trump's win at the presidental elections in USA, I am still depressed, stunned, sad. A so huge disappointment for who trusted the wisdom of a nation that I love so much, and that instead has to deal with the election of mysogynistic, sexist and racist man. If I don't doubt Trump's intelligence, or better, his deceitfulness, I do the one of people who voted for him. Already after Brexit I had doubts about worldwide voters' brain. This book has been some fresh air.
The concept from which the Nobel Prize starts is simple: culture is degenerating. Every cultural form, literature, music, visual art, cinema, is losing in dignity. To put it simply, we are becoming more intellectually poor, idiots.
Since than the cultural offer is multiplied to the point of excess, what is sold better goes on, and so what's easier, accessible to a wider net, what stands out, so opening the path to megalomania, to the failure of quality for the shocking, the excessive, the ridiculous.
Because this degradation of culture, of its extravaganza at any cost, every thing is paid off: politics, international diplomacy, journalism, even sex.
We are a stupid world.
This book will be my laic Bible for the future. Everytime I will tempted by banality and foolishness, I'll read it again.
Thank Mr Llosa. If I could, I'd award you with another Nobel.

Interessantissimo.

What's better than a writer who tells about literature? Who knows the subject better than him? And just a few are more interesting than Cortazar.
In these letters to publishers, translators, writers, friends and lovers, we recall his life and career, how he writes, how he prefers his works are set up, his suggestions and his no to proposals he doesn't like, and most of all, the cronopios, main characters of these pages.
Fully entering in the head of a writer of this such excellence as Cortazar is a unforgettable journey. Who love books and writers, we've been called "literary stalkers" by Francesco Piccolo, who wrote the preface. This is the only case in which, more than being a weakness, it is a source of greatness.
Very interesting.
