Eppure mi è piaciuto un sacco, divorato in un fine settimana. Forse perchè il narratore è l'unico che mi piaccia. Douglas è uno scienziato che lavora per una grande multinazionale. Serio, responsabile, organizzato, un po' noioso. Connie è la moglie. Artista, spigliata, divertente, pronta a lanciarsi in nuove avventure, più accondiscente verso il figlio Albie, giovanotto con l'aria da ribelle alla ricerca di chi è, ma con i soldi del padre. Inoltre, Kat, artista di strada.
E' l'ultima estate di Albie a casa prima dell'università. In onore dei suoi studi d'arte, viene organizzato un giro per l'Europa sulla falsa riga dei Grand Tour ottocenteschi. E devo dire, questo è il motivo per cui ho preso il libro. Città d'arte, musei, cultura e bellezza, il sogno della mia vita. Credo di essere stata un ricco rampollo inglese nella mia vita precedente, si spiegherebbero molte cose.
Al contrario di me, Albie non è proprio felicissimo all'idea. Inoltre, Connie ha comunicato a Douglas che sta pensando di andarsene anche lei. E lui, uomo di scienza, le prova tutte per riprendersi la sua vita, durante l'ultimo viaggio insieme.
Un romanzo divertente, scritto benissimo, ambientato nelle più belle città europee. Ho fatto spudoratamente il tifo per Douglas dalla prima pagina all'ultima. E se volesse rifare il Grand Tour, io ci sono.

Is it possible that I like a novel in which I find unpleasant three of the four main characters? Well, it would be three and a half, because one appears and then disappears.
But I enjoyed a lot, devoured in a weekend. Maybe because the narrator is also the only character I like. Douglas is a scientist who works for a huge corporation. He's serious, conscentious, organized, a bit boring. Connie is his wife. She is an artist, jaunty, funny, always ready for new adventures, more compliant with their son Albie, young man with the appearance of a rebel looking for who he is, but using his father's money. Last, Kat, street performer.
It's the last summer of Albie at home before his studies abroad. In honor of his art studies, his parents organize a trip around Europe along the same lines of the nineteenth-century Grand Tour. And I must admit, this is the reason why I picked this book. Cities of art, museums, culture and beauty, the dream of my life. I think I was a rich english descendant in my last life, a lot of things would find an explanation. Opposite to me, Albie is not very happy. More, Connie has told to Douglas that she is thinking about divorce. And him, man of science, makes any attempts to get back his life, during their last trip together.
A funny novel, well written, set in the most beautiful European cities. I shamelessly supported Douglas from the first page till the end. And if he wants repeating the Grand Tour, I'm in.
