Diviso in tre parti, il primo raccontato dal marito della protagonista, il secondo dal punto di vista del cognato, il terzo della sorella.
La protagonista, dicevo. Yeong-hye, definita all'inizio del libro come insipida, anonima. Una moglie che non dà problemi. Brava cuoca, donna assennata, una brava figlia di una Corea del Sud molto borghese. Poi un giorno, fa un sogno, e diventa vegetariana. A niente valgono le proteste e le minacce del marito e della sua famiglia, ogni genere di carne viene rifiutata. Quella brava moglie coreana è diventata diversa da tutti loro, ribelle. E lei, e noi lettori insieme, iniziamo un viaggio, un ritorno alla naturalità più estrema, un volersi fare albero e aria.
E' un libro che probabilmente solo un orientale avrebbe potuto scrivere. Tra realtà e sogno, carnalità e immaterialità. Il corpo e la mente di questa donna che nel consumarsi accentra su di sè gli altri personaggi, sconvolgendo anche le loro vite.
Un libro magnetico, originale, potentissimo.

A surreal book, one of those leaving you speechless, thinking that writing books isn't for anyone because talented people as Han Kang is rarely born. A book that catches your stomach and your brain, never letting you go. Devoured in one weekend. A magnetic writing.
Divided in three parts, the first one narrated by the main character's husband, the second by the point of view of her brother in law, the third by the her sister's one.
The main character, so. Yeong-hye, in the first pages called insignificant, featureless. A wife who gives no problems. Good cook, wise woman, a good daughter of a conventional South Korea. Then one day, she has a dream, and she becomes vegetarian. Nothing works to make changing her mind, not the protests and the threats of her husband and her family, every kind of meat is refused. That good korean wife is now different, rebel. And she, and us readers with her, starts a journey, a comeback to the most extreme naturalness, a will of being tree and air.
It's a book that probably just an Eastern Asian could write. In between reality and dream, carnality and immateriality. The body and mind of this woman who in consuming herself draws on her the other characters, subverting their life.
A magnetic book, original, powerful.
