I must admit that I am very torn for this book, read during a lazy weekend, never abandoned until the end.
I start with the positive side, because maybe it's less long to explain. Although there are aspects that I did not like, it is a book that I never thought of abandoning, and with which I had reading sessions even of uninterrupted hours. I wanted to know how it continued, and Mr. Boyd's writing style is certainly interesting and enjoyable. The gentleman definitely knows how to write. The story is about a man's entire life, told to us in the first person through his diary. The man in question is Logan Mountstuart, a writer who was completely invented but real enough to ask whether he actually existed. There are precise historical references, its history runs throughout the twentieth century, comes into contact with places and people who made history, and the doubt came to me. Another note of the writer's skill, the real one, Boyd.
And here I could start with the less positive notes. The protagonist comes into contact with really many people who have made the history of art, literature and politics. And apart from Logan's unforgivable dislike for Virginia Woolf and the snooty note for Francis Scott Fitzgerald, there are so many names that at some point the thing also begins to be excessive.
But above all, I must admit, if as a literary character it works, as a character Logan is so unpleasant that in real life would be hard to digest. Obsessed with sex and women, apart from the various daughters, there isn't one with which he doesn't try. On the front cover it is called sensual... to me it seemed only obsessed. I probably find myself sympathetic only towards the end of the book, when he is older, and I recognize the beauty of his life choice. But, and here I repeat myself a little, his life is so full of historical encounters, though never too much in-depth, as if they were a long list of events on which we only have time to read the name, to appear fake and exaggerated even for a novel.
In short, I wanted to give 3 stars because I realize that it is a good book, very well written. But also because I realize that it is not a great book, and has a protagonist who is not even close to good.

Any Human Heart

After the reading of my first Carrere I was curious to learn more about the work of this author. "Other lives but mine" had left me amazed by the delicacy and skill of an author whom I imagined totally different.
This short story was probably not the best choice.
Carrere writes this story to be published on Saturday in the newspaper Le Monde and organizes everything so that it is an experiment in performative literature: his girlfriend will be on the train that Saturday, will buy the newspaper and will have to do everything Carrere tells her in this story. Obviously nothing stupid and harmless like kissing a stranger or making faces or what I know, but much more erotic.
However, the feeling that left me was not at all sensual. I found it all very self-centered, a play with people. As Greek mythology teaches us, human hybris is punished and this is what happens in the finale. I say no more to let you discover the way.
Probably, there will be other books that will let me know Carrere better.

I don't remember who or why someone recommended it, but it doesn't matter. Because now I strongly recommend it.
Carrere tells, in two different moments, of the two worst misfortunes that can happen in a family: the death of a daughter for her parents, and that of a wife and mother, for her husband and three daughters.
In the first case, little Juliette dies victim of a tsunami that hit the coasts of Sri Lanka. In the second case, a young woman, Juliette too, magistrate, wife and mother of three daughters, dies of cancer.
It is a novel about death and life, about the vicissitudes of life. The author talks with grace, intelligence, with an absolutely perfect narrative style.
I was deeply touched by the second part, I appreciated the different plans of the story of Juliette, that of the same author who was his brother-in-law, that of the widower, that of the magistrate friend who also survived cancer.
I wonder why I imagined Carrrere as a rough, bad, heavy writer. While instead I found an intense and beautiful reading.

Other Lives but Mine

This book was given to me along with many others and so I didn't have the chance to dwell carefully on each back cover. But being of Roald Dahl, I trust it. And I did well.
I had read his other books, such as The Witches, The BFG and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. This is, one can say, the first part of his autobiography, where he tells the story of his parents and his school years, up until the moment he is hired at Shell and leaves for Africa.
The style is always so Dahl, great imagination and humor. It could be the story of a very nice person who tells you about his school years and peppers him with the strangest and funniest stories he remembers.
A book that one reads in two days, but that remains dear for the warm it transmits. Very interesting also for the story of the English educational system in the 20s/30s, a world of rules, uniforms, corporal punishments and absolute respect for the teacher's authority, even when that respect is far from being deserved.
In short, a highly recommended book by Dahl, he is to be trusted even without reading the plot!

It seems that is not always true the equation that if you like an author, how he or she thinks, the ideas, then you also like how he or she writes.
Annie Ernaux is an intelligent woman, one of the most interesting intellectual voices of our times.
But this novel... no.
The theme is very interesting, the shame seen through the eyes of a young girl who faces the world, and how this changes the way she looks at herself, her family, the world that surrounds her. Her world, told in first person, the confrontation with her schoolmates, the relationship of her parents, everything in connection with this feeling that the young Annie knows after having witnessed a particularly violent scene between her parents.
What I did not like and which made it difficult for me to read what is certainly not a substantial book was the way the story is told. A series of lists that give more the impression of a part of writing not reviewed by the author, a spasmodic attention to detail with the consequence of filling the reader with information that contributes to burdening the narrative. Very interesting is the reconstruction of the shopkeeper's daughter world, but it gets lost a bit.
In short, I would have appreciated a more fluid story, less careful to stop on the minor detail.
It is the first book I've read by the French author, certainly there will be other opportunities to reevaluate her.

Shame

I testamenti riprendono dove era terminato Il Racconto dell'Ancella.

One of the most anticipated books of the year, certainly awaited by me since I learned of its release. Because The handmaid's tale, read a few years ago, was one of the most important books I've ever read, a set of devastating emotions that changed me. After some time I still felt the anxiety for the story, that awareness that this dystopian world wasn't completely invented but whatever has already happened, it happens now somewhere in the world, it will happen. A completely regulated world, where the body of women is totally subject to rules that remove all rights and powers from the one who owns that body.
The testaments starts where The Handmaid's Tale was finished. If in that book Gilead was at its maximum power and the story was told to us by women who had lived a normal world before and found themselves forced into this new reality, in this new book this very extremist vision meets its end, and we can see the point of view of a girl who was born and raised there, for whom Gilead is the only world she has ever known, is her home even with all its flaws. The other two points of view are of a young girl born in Canada, and above all of Aunt Lydia, the true protagonist of the book, a woman of great cunning and wisdom, who has known the world as it was before and has survived, arriving at the top, thanks only to herself. Even as being part of Gilead, I cannot recognize her as one of the villains, but as one who has plotted in the shadows and whose value is only recognized in the end. A huge character, of great value.
Margaret Atwood succeeds, starting from the testimonies of these three women, to rebuild that world and to create a plot that will keep you in suspense until the end. I really wish I didn't have a life in those two days, so I could concentrate totally on reading, because it really deserves it. Magnificent book, you will want to devour it, as anxiety makes your heart beat faster in the chest.
Powerful book, a wait that has been repaid a thousand times.
