Sono qui raccolti 18 racconti sui rapporti umani, sul romanticismo, in un modo assolutamente non smielato ma anzi, molto ironico e intelligente. Ci sono un uomo e una donna che si incontrano in metropolitana e passano letteralmente l'intera vita in metropolitana cercando il coraggio di parlarsi, due sposi alle prese con le rispettive famiglie e con dei caproni da sacrificare per la felicità futura, ci sono le regole per giocare a Taboo spiegate con degli esempi non proprio canonici del gioco...

Insomma, bisogna solo entrare nell'ottica dell'idea che tutto qui è surreale ma a suo modo anche molto dolce.

Io non l'ho mai visto ma per chi interessa, è lo stesso autore di BoJack Horseman... a questo punto mi toccherà dare una possibilità anche a quello!

After the first couple of short stories I was a bit skeptical about how much I liked this book, and I even abandoned it for a couple of days. Then I heard about it again and I thought that maybe it was me who didn't understand his comedy or I had not yet entered the right mood. And I did well.

Here are collected 18 stories on human relationships, on romanticism, in an absolutely not sickly sweet way but rather, very ironic and intelligent. There are a man and a woman who meet on the subway and literally spend their entire life there trying to find the courage to talk to each other, two spouses struggling with their families and with goats to sacrifice for future happiness, there are the rules to play Taboo explained with some not really canonical examples...

In short, one just has to get into the perspective of the idea that everything here is surreal but in its own way, very sweet too.

I've never watched it but for those who care, he's the author of BoJack Horseman... now I'll have to give that a chance too!

L'età del jazz è finita, Fitzgerald vive una crisi familiare e personale. Gli articoli pubblicati da Esquire sono, come disse Fernanda Pivano, un documento sincero e un grido disperato. Fitzgerald non racconta più le brillanti serate della coppia che era al massimo dello splendore, ma racconta la sua depressione, il suo aver fallito, il suo crollo e accettato, la sua intenzione di risalire la china e ritornare alla normalità. Purtroppo, il mondo non era pronto a vedere il suo eroe scendere dalle vette e il suo mondo, il mondo letterario, tra cui Hemingway che tanto Fitzgerald aveva aiutato all'inizio della sua carriera e che riteneva un amico, si indignò e lo accusò di aver fatto una figura patetica mostrando al mondo il suo crollo.

Fitzgerald morirà poi quattro anni dopo, in stato di povertà, dopo un momento, con il lavoro a Hollywood come sceneggiatore, in cui sembrava essersi ripreso anche economicamente ed era più sereno.

I tre articoli sono incredibilmente sinceri, scritti con uno stile più maturo, con grande profondità d'animo e mente. Chiunque abbia affrontato un momento no può rivedersi in queste parole e ricevere aiuto dalla sua sincerità.

Se Fitzgerald viene visto come il simbolo dell'età del jazz, un uomo dedito solo alle feste, un debole schiavo dell'alcool, queste pagine dimostrano che in realtà sapeva essere più onesto e migliore di tutti i "tosti" scrittori del periodo messi insieme.

In 1936 the three articles that make up this little book were published in the magazine Esquire. Fitzgerald had written them during a period of intense depression, the result of the Wall Street crash and the illness of his wife Zelda, who was diagnosed with schizophrenia in 1930 and will move from one clinic to another since that year until her death.

The jazz age is over, Fitzgerald is experiencing a family and personal crisis. The articles published by Esquire are, as Fernanda Pivano said, a sincere document and a desperate cry. Fitzgerald no longer tells the brilliant evenings of the couple when they were at their peak, but his depression, his failure, his crack-up and the acceptance, his intention to get back on top and return to normalcy. Unfortunately, the world was not ready to see his hero descend from the heights and his world, the literary world, including Hemingway, whom Fitzgerald had helped so much at the beginning of his career and whom he considered a friend, became indignant and accused him of making a pathetic figure showing his failure to the world.

Fitzgerald will then die four years later, in a state of poverty, after a moment, with the work in Hollywood as a screenwriter, in which he seemed to have recovered economically and was more serene.

The three articles are incredibly sincere, written in a more mature style, with great depth of soul and mind. Anyone who has faced a bad moment can see oneself in these words and receive help from his honesty.

If Fitzgerald is seen as the symbol of the jazz age, a party-only man, a weak alcoholic, these pages show that he actually could be more honest and better than all the "tough" writers of his years.

The Crack-Up

Ho deciso di leggere questa raccolta di racconti soprattutto per un motivo: il racconto Il poliziotto della biblioteca, su cosa succederebbe se un utente non restituisse in tempo un libro o meglio, cosa succederebbe se un demone diventasse una bibliotecaria... la raccolta è composta di altri tre racconti.

Cosa potrei dire che non sia già stato detto di Stephen King? Trovare la via per inserire il paranormale, l'horror in situazioni di vita assolutamente normali che il 99% di noi ha provato, un viaggio aereo, una Polaroid, un libro riportato tardi in biblioteca... e uno dei peggiori incubi di ogni scrittore, essere accusato di plagio.

Non solo... la formula del grandissimo successo di King è che, a parte quello che è il cuore del fenomeno dell'orrore, tutto il resto è assolutamente umano e realistico, scritto in maniera avvincente, di grande suspense.

Sicuramente le mie letture di King non si fermeranno qui, adesso che ho scoperto e riscoperto il suo infinito talento, non ne avrò abbastanza per molto tempo!

It isn't the first book I read by Stephen King but it is certainly the one that made me fully realize how much the title of King of Horror is well deserved! A book of 800 pages and I've read it in six days, literally devoured, I couldn't wait to go home to continue reading... these, personally, are the crucial factors!

I've decided to read this collection of short stories mainly for one reason: the short story The Library Policeman, about what would happen if a user didn't return a book in time or rather, what would happen if a demon became a librarian... the collection is composed of three other stories.

What could I say that hasn't already been said about Stephen King? Finding the way to insert the paranormal, the horror in absolutely normal life situations that 99% of us have experienced, a plane trip, a Polaroid, a book brought back late to the library... and one of the worst nightmares of any writer, be accused of plagiarism.

Not only that... the formula of King's huge success is that, apart from what is the horror core, everything else is absolutely human and realistic, written in such a compelling way.

Surely my reading of King will not stop here, now that I have discovered and rediscovered his infinite talent, I will not have enough for a long time!

Four Past Midnight

Golding ha voluto qui rappresentare il suo pensiero, per cui "Gli umani producono il male come le api producono il miele". Questo messaggio diretto, immagino, a un pubblico di ragazzini coetanei dei protagonisti, circa dieci anni, anche perché per chiunque sia andato a scuola e abbia vissuto le dinamiche tra ragazzi, non ha bisogno che gli venga spiegato un concetto molto chiaro a tutti per esperienza. Solo che in questo caso i ragazzini non sono a scuola, sorvegliati in qualche modo, ma in un'isola deserta, senza alcun controllo nè freni. Poco e niente se paragonato a quello che succede in un altro romanzo di ragazzini abbandonati su un'isola deserta, Battle Royale, altrimenti detto l'Hunger Games giapponese, con la differenza che lì deve rimanerne solo uno. Qui c'è inizialmente un gruppo che elegge Ralph come capo di quella che dovrebbe essere una democrazia, dove ognuno ha diritto di parola e dove la cosa più importante è fare la guardia al fuoco che, levando fumo, dovrebbe segnalare la loro presenza alle navi di passaggio. Un gruppo però, capitanato da Jack, lascia stare il fuoco e si dedica alla caccia, passatempo molto più soddisfacente e divertente, lasciando perdere il fumo che si spegne proprio nel momento in cui passa una nave. Cacciatori e raccoglitori, vi ricorda qualcosa? Fortunatamente, nel mondo reale i due gruppi collaborano tra di loro, altrimenti la vita del genere umano, non avrebbe avuto così lungo corso.

Come molti altri libri, probabilmente l'ho letto che sono già adulta e quindi non mi ha entusiasmato o scioccata come ha fatto per altri lettori. E se devo essere sincera, la prima metà l'ho trovato francamente noiosa, solo dopo finalmente succede qualcosa. E il finale... no spoiler ma posso dirlo che è un po' forzato?

Not knowing if and when a ship will ever pass there to save them, they are forced to organize themselves to survive. But shortly after the start of their adventure, power struggles and irrational fears take possession of the kids' lives, leading them to fight against each other, even against the benefit of the whole group, to the worst consequences.

Golding here wanted to represent his thinking, for which "Humans produce evil as bees produce honey". This message is aimed at, I imagine, young readers of the same age as the protagonists, about ten years old, also because for anyone who has gone to school and has experienced the dynamics between teenagers, one doesn't need to be explained a concept well known by everyone for experience. Except that in this case the kids are not in school, supervised in some way, but on a desert island, without any checks or brakes. Nothing compared to what happens in another novel about children abandoned on a desert island, Battle Royale, otherwise known as the Japanese Hunger Games, with the difference that there only one must remain. Here starts with a group that elects Ralph as the head of what should be a democracy, where everyone has the right to speak and where the most important thing is to guard the fire which, raising smoke, should signal their presence to the ships. A group, however, led by Jack, leaves the fire alone and devotes itself to hunting, a much more satisfying and fun pastime, leaving aside the fire that goes out just as a ship passes. Hunters and gatherers, does it remind you of anything? Fortunately, in the real world the two groups collaborate with each other, otherwise the life of mankind would not have been so long.

Like many other books, I have read it that I am already an adult and therefore it did not thrill me or shock me as it did for other younger readers. And to be honest, I found the first half frankly boring, only after that something finally happens. And the ending... no spoilers but can I say it's a bit forced?

Innanzitutto, nel retro di copertina mi è stato promesso non esserci il lieto fine, mentre già la prima storia va totalmente da un'altra parte e non è per niente inerente al filone. Anche Allez, la quarta storia, non l'ho trovata particolarmente meritevole.

Mentre le altre tre sono molto belle, ben scritte, interessanti e soprattutto, sono scelte azzeccate per questa raccolta e per questo tema. Il mio preferito in assoluto è sicuramente l'ultimo, ho amato molto quell'atmosfera, davvero perfetto.

Su cinque stelle di voto, il 3 ci sta tutto.

From time to time, I like to add these little books from AbEditore to my collection of horror books. Graphically, they are little jewels, perfectly well-finished, aged effect paper and beautiful themed illustrations. They are also often an excuse to learn about new stories from new authors. In this case, however, I must admit that I wasn't completely satisfied by the selection.

First of all, on the back cover I was promised there wouldn't have been a happy ending, while the first story already goes completely elsewhere and is not at all inherent to the trend. Even Allez, the fourth story, I didn't find it particularly worthy.

While the other three are very beautiful, well written, interesting and above all, they are well chosen choices for this collection and for this theme. My absolute favorite is definitely the last one, I loved that atmosphere very much, really perfect.

Out of a five-star rating, 3 is the right choice.

Till death do you part

E' un saggio su come veniva vissuto e pensato l'amore e il sesso nell'antica Grecia, partendo dai miti per arrivare a come ne discutevano i filosofi e come vivevano gli abitanti e soprattutto le abitanti delle città antiche.

Eva Cantarella fa un excursus molto base diviso per argomenti, utile per chi non conosce la materia e ci si approccia con questo libro. Soprattutto la parte della mitologia, è molto basica, ci sono anche degli alberi genealogici per non perdersi nei meandri dei rapporti tra i protagonisti. Stupirà vedere come, gira che rigira, alla fine tra dei e mortali, sono tutti imparentati tra di loro!

Comunque non è mica detto che tutti i saggi debbano essere per forza dei mattoni incomprensibili, anzi, apprezziamo chi padroneggia talmente la materia che riesce a spiegarla in modo chiaro, semplice e conciso!

I have to admit that when I started this book I thought it was going to be interesting for sure, but I also didn't imagine it would be a light reading. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad it was because it was just what I needed.

It is an essay on how love and sex were lived and thought in ancient Greece, starting from the myths to get to how the philosophers discussed it and how the inhabitants and especially the female inhabitants of ancient cities lived.

Eva Cantarella makes a very basic excursus divided by topics, useful for those unfamiliar with the subject and approaching it with this book. Above all the part of mythology is very basic, there are also family trees so as not to get lost in the maze of the relationships between the protagonists. You will be amazed to see how, round in the end, between gods and mortals, they are all related to each other!

However, not necessarily all essays must be incomprehensible loads, indeed, we appreciate those who master the subject so much that they can explain it in a clear, simple and concise way!

Love is a God. Sex and the polis

Sono molto contenta di aver ritrovato questo libriccino e di aver letto il primo racconto (avendo, il secondo, un libro e un post qui nel blog a sè), perché è davvero molto bello e di grande suspence.

Il protagonista Latimer, il secondo figlio di un uomo molto ricco, appassionato di poesia ma costretto a seguire il volere paterno per gli studi e la futura carriera, sviluppa una dote psichica molto particolare... Il libro ha una atmosfera molto vittoriana, grande introspezione psicologica e un finale perfetto. Non è molto lungo ma è davvero una lettura da non perdere per gli amanti del leggere.

Even though I have had this book for about seven years, I didn't remember ever reading it. Indeed, I even had marked it because I was interested in reading the second story here, that by Elizabeth Gaskell that I bought a short time ago in the edition of AbEditore.

I am very happy to have found this little book and to have read the first story (having, the second, a book and a post here in the blog on its own), because it is really very beautiful and of great suspense.

The protagonist Latimer, the second son of a very rich man, passionate about poetry but forced to follow his father's will for his studies and future career, develops a very particular psychic gift ... The book has a very Victorian atmosphere, great psychological introspection and a perfect ending. It is not very long but it is really a must read for the lovers of reading.
