La spiegazione del titolo, nella lingua originale inglese, è la somiglianza nella pronuncia tra il nome "Ernest" e l'aggettivo "earnest" che vuol dire sincero, fervido, dedicato. Tutte doti del perfetto marito a cui aspirano Guendalina e Cecilia, le quali sono assolutamente convinte che l'unica cosa che importi nel matrimonio sia sposare un uomo di nome Ernesto. Di tutt'altro avviso invece la temibile Lady Bracknell, madre di Guendalina, che ambisce ad avere un genero alla moda e di buona rendita.
Così, i due Agenore e Worthing sono ben intenzionati a dover ricorrere a un secondo battesimo per fare felici le donne che amano. Ma nel mondo di Oscar Wilde c'è sempre una sorpresa dietro l'angolo...
Io adoro Oscar, il suo essere così witty, il suo essere la persona più brillante e intelligente e ironica e così inglese (lui nato irlandese) di tutti. Non si finirà mai di elogiare il suo spirito e la sua grandezza. E non sarà mai abbastanza.

Probably the most famous theatrical performance written by Oscar Wilde. I think is the third time I read it, and every time is so smart and brilliant.
The explanation of the title, in the original language, is the same pronounce of the name "Ernest" and the adjective "earnest", that means honest, heartfelt, devoted. Qualities of the perfect husband for Gwendolen and Cecily, who are sure that the only thing that matters in marriage is a husband called Ernest. Quite another opinion has the dreadful Lady Brackwell, Gwendolyn mother, yearning for a smart and rich son-in-law.
So, Agenore and Worthing are well-intentioned to have a second baptism to make happy the women they love. But in the wild Wilde's world, there is always a surprise just around the corner...
I love Oscar, his being so witty, his being so smart and brilliant and ironic and English (although he is Irish). The world can't stop applaud to his greatness. Never enough.
