Una Comma Queen o una Grammar Nazi? Mary Norris ha lavorato per tre decenni al New Yorker, nelle vesti di colei che corregge le bozze degli articoli che poi andranno in stampa. In questo libro di memorie ripercorre la sua straordinaria carriera e soprattutto i dubbi più amletici sulla grammatica: punteggiatura, lo spelling delle parole, gli apostrofi, il genere delle parole (che per gli anglofoni non è proprio immediato capire perchè in italiano la finestra è femminile mentre il tavolo è maschile...), e poi sulle idiosincrasie sugli attrezzi del mestiere vero e proprio.
Un libro che mi è piaciuto, ma ammetto un po' pesantino per chi non è interessato a tutti questi tecnicismi.
Ma credo che da solo valga il libro un aneddoto raccontato che riguarda Philip Roth: arriva sulla sua scrivania il primo capitolo di "Ho sposato un comunista", ovviamente immacolato perchè già passato da altre mani. Mary Norris nota un piccolo errore in una citazione da un libro di storia per bambini. Più tardi, le viene recapitata una copia di quella pagina con "Di Mary Norris, Roth ha detto: "Chi è questa donna? Viene a vivere con me?""
Mi auguro che se la sia fatta incorniciare e l'abbia appesa sopra il letto. Almeno, io avrei fatto così.

In this book of memories, she recalls her extraordinary career and especially the most amlethic doubts about grammar: punctuation, spelling of words, apostrophs, the genre of words (which for English speakers is not immediately understand why in Italian the window is feminine While the table is masculine...), and then on idiosyncrasies on actual craft tools.
A book I liked, but I admit a bit heavy for those who are not interested in all these technicalities.
But I think the book is worthy even just for an anecdote about Philip Roth: his first chapter on "I married a communist" came to her desk, obviously immaculate because it had already passed by other hands. Mary Norris notes a small mistake in a quotation from a children's story book. Later, she's delivered a copy of that page to "By Mary Norris, Roth said,"Who is this woman? Are you coming to live with me?""
I hope it will be framed and hanged over the bed. At least, I would have done so.
