C'è il professore universitario che rivive il suo passato durante la guerra per l'indipendenza del Biafra. Una ragazza che scampa a un attentato grazie a un'altra donna, di un'altra religione e di un'altra etnia. E poi ci sono le mogli degli uomini che hanno fatto o sperano di fare fortuna, parcheggiate a casa, in una terra straniera, senza gli ingredienti per cucinare i loro piatti tipici.
Quella cosa intorno al collo, infatti, è quella sensazione di mancanza, di non sentirsi a casa, che le protagoniste di questo libro sentono loro.
Una scrittura elegante, potente senza essere urlata, e che per questo entra ancora di più sotto la pelle.

I got to know Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie thanks to We should all be feminists and Dear Ijeawele.
This collection of stories is my first step in her world of narrative writer. Twelve wonderful stories between Nigeria and the United States.
There is the woman in a row at the US consulate for a visa to escape from a country that wants her husband, journalist, dead. There is a university professor who relives his past during the war for the independence of Biafra. A girl escapes from an attack with another woman, of another religion, and another ethnicity. And then there are the wives of men who have done or hope to make a fortune, parking them home, in a foreign land, without even the ingredients to cook their typical dishes.
That thing around the neck is, in fact, that feeling of lack, not feeling at home, that the protagonists of this book feel their.
An elegant writing, powerful without being screamed, and that's why it enters even more under the skin.
