Già tutti quanti sanno quanto io apprezzi e stimi Ian McEwan e ami qualunque cosa esca dalla sua penna. La notizia dell'uscita di un suo nuovo romanzo è sempre una grande gioia. In questo caso, non si tratta di un romanzo, ma ero in libreria già il giorno dell'uscita.
Invito alla meraviglia è una raccolta di discorsi e saggi sulla scienza e sul rapporto con la letteratura. Ognuno dei saggi affronta un diverso aspetto della relazione tra i due, prendendo come esempi diversi scrittori e scienziati. E' una lettura interessante, intelligente, ricca di spunti. Ma non poteva essere di meno da un intellettuale come Ian McEwan che della scienza si è sempre interessato e annovera tra le sue amicizie Richard Dawkins. Mettere insieme letteratura e scienza non stupisce nessuno che lo segua e conosca la sua opera, come non siamo stupiti da quanto sia interessante questa raccolta di saggi. Avevo già letto gli ultimi due, già presenti in traduzione italiana, ma averli tutti riuniti, da riprendere e da risfogliare, è sempre cosa gradita.
Come al solito, Invito alla meraviglia non è solo il tema e il titolo di questa raccolta di racconti, ma è anche un'anticipazione di quello che si proverà leggendola.

Everyone already knows how much I appreciate and respect Ian McEwan and love whatever comes out of his pen. The news of the release of a new novel is always a great joy. In this case, it isn't a novel, but I was at the bookshop on the day of its release.
Invitation to Wonder is a collection of speeches and essays on science and the relationship with literature. Each of the essays addresses a different aspect of the relationship between the two, taking different writers and scientists as examples. It is an interesting, intelligent reading, full of ideas. But it couldn't be less from an intellectual like Ian McEwan who has always been interested in science and counts Richard Dawkins among his friends. Bringing literature and science together doesn't surprise anyone who follows him and knows his work, just as we aren't surprised by how interesting this collection of essays is. I had already read the last two, already present in Italian translation, but having them all together, to be resumed and re-browsed, is always a welcome thing.
As usual, Invitation to Wonder is not only the theme and title of this collection of short stories, it is also a preview of what one will feel while reading it.
