I do not want to write here of such an important chapter of my life, I will try to make a review as impersonal as possible. But this book is the most personal book for me that De Beauvoir could have ever written.
It is the first person diary of the last period of the writer's mother's life. After what initially looked like a fall and a fracture, it turns out to be suffering from a bowel cancer with a very short life expectancy. And so the world of the two De Beauvoir sisters narrows at the hospital, contacts with doctors and nurses.
Simone reports his thoughts, tells the life of the mother in the relationship with his father, but above all the dynamics of a mother-daughter relationship. And a daughter in the face of illness and the death of her mother.
I said before that this is a very personal book for me. Because it's as if Simone had told my thoughts. I found myself totally in her. She, in her magnificent style, told me about myself.
The most sincere and true book I have ever read.
Sorry if I could not be impersonal. But it is impossible for me.

to be no one's sleep beneath so many
lids.

By now it will be understood that I don't go to the library with a list of what I want, but I go, I see what there is and then I decide instinctively.
This book was the result of a combination of reason and instinct, because I took it because about this theme, as I believe many others, I know very little. We know well or not what is happening but we haven't the basics to understand it. And since I have no intention of being indoctrinated by the first expert found on the Internet, I decided to learn.
Obviously, this book will not make you a Middle East political experts. It is a basic book, with notions clearly explained about the currents of Islam, the "Arab" world, a concept that means many things, on the relationship with the West and above all on where and how fundamentalism has found space to grow and develop.
It is a very interesting book, with clear and schematic explanations. It is exactly the kind of book I was looking for to better understand this topic.

This novel deals with a very important, difficult topic, such as explaining how a person can become a terrorist, through the figure of Alice Mellings. Born and raised in a family of the English upper middle class, the father is the owner of a successful typography and a stationery shop, big house in Hampstead, a life made of no financial lack and many parties where so much was eaten and drunk. Once the time of the golden age has last and the parents are separated, for a while Alice together with her boyfriend Jasper lives with her mother in the big house until the moment when the incomprehensions become unsustainable and the couple moves in a squat.
It is here that we find them in the first pages. From the first hours spent in the house Alice, good girl, good organizer, dedicated herself to arranging the house, not only addressing the light and gas company, but also aesthetically with tables, carpets and curtains.
There is a detail that makes Alice an interesting and at the same time unbearable character. Her basic hypocrisy, the fact of feeling communist, of fighting for a better world, where all those like her and who do not adhere to a certain system of beliefs, are fascists. Including her own parents, from whom she claims money for her life in the commune, she does not scruple about stealing it, uses it for her purposes and together regrets her previous lifestyle. In words she is a communist, in fact she is a child.
Parents, perhaps also because of the greater experience of life, are the most rational side. They have spoiled their daughter and are having to explain to her, without success, that life is made of responsibility, that you cannot take everything you want, caring about others and using them only for their own purposes. Alice is good at organizing herself, with the money she gets from others, her family, her parents.
At some point in the book, towards the beginning, I wondered how it was possible that Alice was with someone like Jasper... and then you realize that Jasper uses her as Alice is used to using others, only interested in when she needs them.
Doris Lessing has written a magnificent book, from which it is impossible to detach, based on a true character, with all her faults, a character who perfectly understands the others but does not understand herself and her own faults, even when they are clearly explained.
I imagine that Alice is in part drawn on Lessing's life experiences, and that Dorothy is the point of view of the more mature writer, later on with experience.

I was interested in the topic of depression and I wanted to tackle it, thinking of starting it with a novel, believing it was the most affordable as a first impact.
In reality, this by Vinci is the story of personal events, which touched the author in the first person. Her battle against depression, the symptoms, the ways of getting out of it, between the couch of the psychoanalyst and the cosmetic surgeon. And above all, the personal nodes to dissolve, the acceptance of loss, of being humans who fail, who live and fall.
A very personal book, very hard, extremely sincere.
As a first approach I think I have chosen the right one.
It is not a difficult book to read in the stylistic sense of the term, because it never uses too technical terms. It is more a story of her life and of how she has faced it. But it is a difficult book to read due to the importance and the delicacy of the subjects.

The Euphoria of the title is what an anthropologist feels when studying a society and that precise moment arrives, in which the anthropologist feels that world entirely its own. Then maybe there is the disappointment of realizing that two months are not enough to understand completely, but that moment of pure joy, exaltation, a sense of understanding, that is euphoria.
And I'm sure the models of the protagonists of this story, have tried the euphoria several times. Nell, Fen and Bankson are actually Margaret Mead, her husband Reo Fortune and Gregory Bateson, described in a fictional way in the period they spent together in New Guinea to study the tribes of the place.
As a person who studied and became interested in anthropology in my university time, and to whom I dedicated my degree thesis, I loved this book. Because, although in part, it brings back a piece of life of one of the greatest anthropologists, and tells the life of anthropologists in general. The method of study, the approach to a tribe without preconceptions, sometimes even being deceitful takes to get to the result.
And the attitude that each of the three has towards the matter is reflected in their private life, where the attraction between Nell and Bankson grows (and in real life, between Mead and Bateson), attraction not only physical but also and especially mental, and Fen, the jealous and violent husband, becomes more aggressive even in his work.
Beautiful book, very interesting both from the anthropological point of view and for the personal story of the three protagonists.

This is a novel that has had many second chances with me.
Initially, I had seen it on the shelves of the library, I had picked it up but the usual story of the love obsession had not convinced me. I am a bit fed up with bad love, in my life or at least in my reading, I wanted something to learn from, to improve.
The next time, perhaps more malleable, I got it.
When I started it, I evidently resumed the same state of mind that I had the first time I had seen it. About page 50 I also said enough, and I left it beside me on the couch. But then, five minutes, I took it back and I told myself it was right to give it a second chance.
In the end I finished it, and I'm afraid there will be no room for a rethink in writing the review. Because verba volant, scripta manent, and if for what is written in the infinite ether of Internet, the review will remain. I will be able to change my mind, who knows, one day, but this will remain.
I'm starting from a stylistic point of view, which is probably the one I'm 100% sure about.
Mrs. Pezzali writes really well, her story is elegant, you want to continue reading just to enjoy this beauty. And this is also one of the reasons why I went ahead, the other one of course is to know how it ends.
The story. Well, I would say that everything is in love obsession. Giulia does, undoes, calls to say nothing, sends 60 messages a day, writes Homeric poems that then are not even send. At one point, the phrase "I was sure he would come, he would never give up on me", it says a lot about her. I will not say what happens, if he arrives or not, but when I meet a character, man or woman who is, that says something like that, I always hope that the other does not arrive, that he/she puts him/her back in his/her place, in its delirious of believing that anyone lives and despairs for them. In novels it usually happens almost never, but I continue to hope.
After all, however, we have all been young, and 99% of the population likes to believe themselves to be the protagonist of a romance, creating bonds with inaccessible people or that are there just for a fuck, whose inaccessibility makes them, not one knows for what strange artifice, incredibly attractive and object of madness.
However, everything is explained in a sentence of the mother to the protagonist, who tells her, not exactly the words "you should make some more friends".
Here it is.
In short, I gave three stars for writing and because anyway in the madness of love, good or bad we all passed. But the two protagonists are the two stars that are missing to reach the full vote.
