E sono sicura che i modelli dei protagonisti di questa storia, l'euforia l'abbiano provata varie volte. Nell, Fen e Bankson in realtà sono Margaret Mead, il marito Reo Fortune e Gregory Bateson, descritti in modo romanzato nel periodo che passarono insieme in Nuova Guinea a studiare le tribù del luogo.
Da persona che ha studiato e si è appassionata all'antropologia nel periodo universitario, e a cui dedicai la mia tesi di laurea, questo libro mi è piaciuto molto. Perchè, sebbene in parte, riporta un pezzo di vita di una delle più grandi antropologhe, e racconta la vita degli antropologi in generale. Il metodo di studio, l'avvicinarsi a una tribù senza preconcetti, lo studio, a volte anche l'essere subdoli che ci vuole per arrivare al risultato.
E l'atteggiamento che ognuno dei tre ha nei confronti della materia si rispecchia nella loro vita privata, dove piano piano cresce l'attrazione tra Nell e Bankson (e nella vita vera, tra Mead e Bateson), attrazione non solo fisica ma anche e soprattutto mentale, e Fen, il marito geloso e violento, si fa più aggressivo anche nel suo lavoro.
Bellissimo libro, molto interessante sia dal punto di vista antropologico sia per la storia personale dei tre protagonisti.

The Euphoria of the title is what an anthropologist feels when studying a society and that precise moment arrives, in which the anthropologist feels that world entirely its own. Then maybe there is the disappointment of realizing that two months are not enough to understand completely, but that moment of pure joy, exaltation, a sense of understanding, that is euphoria.
And I'm sure the models of the protagonists of this story, have tried the euphoria several times. Nell, Fen and Bankson are actually Margaret Mead, her husband Reo Fortune and Gregory Bateson, described in a fictional way in the period they spent together in New Guinea to study the tribes of the place.
As a person who studied and became interested in anthropology in my university time, and to whom I dedicated my degree thesis, I loved this book. Because, although in part, it brings back a piece of life of one of the greatest anthropologists, and tells the life of anthropologists in general. The method of study, the approach to a tribe without preconceptions, sometimes even being deceitful takes to get to the result.
And the attitude that each of the three has towards the matter is reflected in their private life, where the attraction between Nell and Bankson grows (and in real life, between Mead and Bateson), attraction not only physical but also and especially mental, and Fen, the jealous and violent husband, becomes more aggressive even in his work.
Beautiful book, very interesting both from the anthropological point of view and for the personal story of the three protagonists.
