Il terrore più grande di una donna: macchiarsi e far capire a chiunque che ha il ciclo. La frase che scoccia di più? "Cos'è, hai il ciclo?". Conosco donne che se hanno bisogno di un assorbente ti prendono in disparte e con fare da cospiratrice colpevole te lo chiedono sussurrando. Conosco uomini a cui fa schifo addirittura tenere in mano una confezione di assorbenti chiusa, appena comprata al supermercato.
E' un qualcosa di cui non si parla, che a malapena si chiama con il suo nome.
Ma perchè? E' una cosa normale, che succede a tutte le donne. Però è anche un fattore importantissimo nella lotta di potere. Parte della nostra condizione di inferiorità risale nel ciclo. Quante volte sarà stato detto a Hillary Clinton che una donna non può governare perchè preda dei propri sbalzi ormonali? Le donne in Nepal vengono spedite in capanne isolate per tutto il periodo del ciclo, perchè impure, facilmente prede di animali selvaggi. L'endometriosi è una malattia seria, ma molto spesso viene scambiata solo per una donna che si lagna e basta invece di sopportare come tutte.
E vogliamo dimenticare il fatto che gli assorbenti, nella nostra civilissima Italia, sono ancora tassati come bene di lusso? Al contrario dei rasoi...
Insomma, l'ignoranza per quanto riguarda il ciclo e la scarsa propensione a parlarne sono infiniti. Tra le mie coetanee vedo qualcosa muoversi, vedo qualche mito sfatato, ma niente che basti. C'è ancora tanto da fare.
Questo libro è un tassello, ma è davvero completo. Spazia tra storia, antropologia, medicina, e storie di vita vissuta. Per quanto mi riguarda, le parti mediche sono state forse le più ostiche e non sono sicura di aver capito tutto. Ma insomma, il significato generale ce l'ho.
Bel libro, molto interessante. Un ottimo punto verso la conoscenza di questo aspetto così importante delle nostre vite di donne.

The greatest terror of a woman: to stain and make clear to anyone she has her period. The phrase that annoys the most? "What is it, do you have your period?". I know women who, if they need a tampon, take you aside and acting as a guilty conspirator, asking you for it in a whisper. I know men who are disgusted to even hold a closed pack of tampons, just bought at the supermarket.
It's something that we do not talk about, which is hardly called by its name.
But why? It's a normal thing, which happens to all women. But it is also a very important factor in the fight for power. Part of our inferiority status goes back to the period. How many times have Hillary Clinton been told that a woman can not govern because she is prey to her hormonal changes? Women in Nepal are sent to isolated huts for the entire period, because they are impure, but so, easily prey to wild animals. Endometriosis is a serious illness, but very often it is mistaken only for a woman who complains and suffices instead of enduring like everyone else.
And we want to forget the fact that the sanitary pads, in our civilized Italy, are still taxed as a luxury item? Unlike razors to shave beards...
In short, ignorance regarding the period and the low propensity to talk about it are endless. Among my peers I see something moving, I see some myth displaced, but nothing is enough. There is still much to do.
This book is a piece, but it is really complete. It goes between history, anthropology, medicine, and stories of lived life. As far as I'm concerned, the medical parts were perhaps the most difficult and I'm not sure I understood everything. But in short, the general meaning I have it.
Nice book, very interesting. An excellent point towards getting to know this very important aspect of our lives as women.
