Data l'eccellente qualità dei libri della Abeditore e la recensione fatta da un amico di Oscar Wilde, secondo cui questo fosse "la storia più terrificante mai scritta", non potevo non essere curiosa di leggerlo.
E così, in quella che ritenevo la perfetta ambientazione, una grigia domenica mattina di pioggia l'ho letto. Ecco, ambientazione perfetta, libro un po' meno. Non so cosa abbia letto l'amico di Oscar Wilde, ma probabilmente poco altro perchè di terrificante in questa storia non c'è molto.
A tratti ci sono delle fiammelle di speranza, qualche pensiero più interessante, ma per il resto del tempo sembra che Crowley cerchi disperatamente di creare una storia disgustosa più che terrificante, non riuscendoci. C'è grande differenza tra il disgusto e il terrore, e immaginavo che uno scrittore della sua fama lo sapesse. Insomma, diciamo che l'idea che mi ero fatta di lui prima di leggere il libro, detto in termini poco tecnici, un "cazzaro", sia stata confermata.
Difficile che legga qualcos'altro di suo. Ma della ABEditore sicuramente continuerò a fidarmi, una scivolata si concede a tutti.

Given the excellent quality of ABEditore's books and the review made by a friend of Oscar Wilde that this was "the most terrifying story ever written", I couldn't help but be curious to read it.
And so, in what I thought was the perfect setting, I've read it on a gray rainy Sunday morning. Here, perfect setting, a little less perfect the book. I don't know what Oscar Wilde's friend read, but probably little else because this story isn't so much terrifying.
At times there are little sparks of hope, some more interesting thoughts, but for the rest of the time it seems that Crowley is desperately trying to create a disgusting rather than terrifying story, and failing. There is a big difference between disgust and terror, and I assumed that a writer of his fame knew that. In short, let's say that the idea that I had made of him before reading the book has been confirmed.
It's unlikely that I will read anything else by him. But I will certainly continue to trust ABEditore, a mistake is granted to everyone.
