I had already been told that this is a beautiful short novel and now that I have finally read it, I can say that they were absolutely right in recommending it!
The brilliant director of the Moscow Institute of Zoology, Professor Persikov, manages, by chance, to discover that the amoebas placed under a red ray, proliferate at an accelerated rate and give birth to much stronger newborns. Before "the ray of life" can be better studied, the news leaves the laboratory, ends up in all the newspapers and ends up with Rokk, the manager of a farm who gets the devices delivered to remedy a chicken great death toll. Because an exchange of crates, however, Rokk receives the anaconda and ostrich eggs that were supposed to serve Professor Persikov... instead of chickens and hens, monstrous reptiles come out of Rokk's company that sow terror and destruction throughout the Russia.
Bulgakov, as he did in Dog's Heart, "plays" with an incredible scientific experiment to teach a very clear moral: science is not a thing to be handled lightly because it can be a very powerful weapon and can redeem humanity in terrible ways, especially if those who manage it don't have the necessary intellectual and ethical caliber.
Really nice short novel, you can read it in a short time but it leaves a mark, especially the second part which is the one where the drama takes place and which contains very strong parts, I would even say horror.

Avete presente la canzone "Sympathy for the Devil" dei Rolling Stones? Ecco a voi Woland...
E' satira politica e sociale, e allegoria religiosa.
E' un mondo esilarante, metafisico, incredibile.
Bulgakov ha creato un vero capolavoro. Da giramenti di testa assicurati.

What an incredible masterpiece! What an amazing book!
It is also difficult to make a summary, as the book is so full of incredible characters, action, stories, that I really do not know where to start.
Let's see if I can outline at least some guideline.
The Master is a writer who is working on a manuscript about the story of Pontius Pilate and the death of Jesus. He is persecuted by Soviet authority, accused of writing an apology of Jesus Christ, and is found in a psychiatric hospital. Margarita is the woman he loves and who loves him, married to a man she loves, but she has never forgotten his love and his book.
The protagonist who moves everything and from which everything iis moved is Woland, who appeared in Moscow with his servant Azazello and his group of servants, including the cat Behemoth and the witch Hella.
In fact, Woland is Satan, thanks to which the Master and Margarita meet and rescue themselves. A Satan not seen as the incarnation of pure evil, but as a bewildering and mocking, extremely clever and disenchanted human being. Do you know the "Sympathy for the Devil" song from the Rolling Stones? Here you are, Woland...
It is political and social satire, and religious allegory.
It's a hilarious, metaphysical, incredible world.
Bulgakov has created a masterpiece. Sure dizziness.

The Master and Margarita

Let's try an experiment of fanta-medicine. We take a human pituitary and we transfer it in a dog's brain. What would going to happen? Probably, and better so, nobody has the answer.
In the 1928, Michail Bulgakov tried to give an answer with this novel. The Prof. Filippovic operates the foundling dog Sharink, transplanting the pituitary of a just dead criminal, and attends his modification. The cute puppy desirous of house and food, Sharink becomes an obscene and rude and egotist human being. He renames himself Poligraf Poligrafovich Sharikov, get employed as cat catcher and wants to get a piece of the Professor house. On the background, a Russia in full proletarian revolution where a half-man/half-dog too has the right to being treated like anyone else. The atmosphere in professor's house is heavy, the dog is now uncontrollable and the reverse surgery is done.
What happens to playing with pituitary and personality? A little dog takes the personality of the man that "give" him the brain, bestial traits presents just in the Sharink/man, not in Sharink/dog. A mere experiment of fanta-literature and fanta-medicine, or a critique of mankind and what it becomes under a dictatorial regime? Let me inclined decisively for the second one.
