Nel 1928, Michail Bulgakov ha provato a dare una risposta a questa domanda in questo romanzo. Il professor Filippovic opera il cane trovatello Pallino, gli trapianta l'ipofisi di un delinquente morto quella notte, e assiste alla sua trasformazione. Da quel tenero cucciolo desideroso di una casa e di cibo, Pallino diventa un essere umano sboccato e maleducato e egoista. Si fa ribattezzare Poligraf Poligrafovic Pallinov, trova un lavoro come Accalappia-Gatti e pretende di ottenere un pezzo della casa del suo professore/santone. Sullo sfondo, una Russia nel pieno della rivoluzione proletaria in cui anche un mezzo uomo/mezzo cane ha diritto a essere uguale a tutti gli altri. La situazione in casa del professore si fa pesante, Pallinov è ormai incontrollabile e viene condotta infine l'operazione inversa.
Cosa succede a giocare con ipofisi e personalità? Un cagnolino assume le caratteristiche dell'uomo che gli ha "donato",diciamo così, il cervello, caratteristiche animalesche presenti però solo nell'uomo/Pallinov ma non certo nel cane/Pallino. Un mero esperimento di fantaletteratura e fantamedicina, o una critica dell'uomo e di quello che riesce a diventare sotto un regime dispotico? Lasciatemi decisamente propendere per la seconda.

Let's try an experiment of fanta-medicine. We take a human pituitary and we transfer it in a dog's brain. What would going to happen? Probably, and better so, nobody has the answer.
In the 1928, Michail Bulgakov tried to give an answer with this novel. The Prof. Filippovic operates the foundling dog Sharink, transplanting the pituitary of a just dead criminal, and attends his modification. The cute puppy desirous of house and food, Sharink becomes an obscene and rude and egotist human being. He renames himself Poligraf Poligrafovich Sharikov, get employed as cat catcher and wants to get a piece of the Professor house. On the background, a Russia in full proletarian revolution where a half-man/half-dog too has the right to being treated like anyone else. The atmosphere in professor's house is heavy, the dog is now uncontrollable and the reverse surgery is done.
What happens to playing with pituitary and personality? A little dog takes the personality of the man that "give" him the brain, bestial traits presents just in the Sharink/man, not in Sharink/dog. A mere experiment of fanta-literature and fanta-medicine, or a critique of mankind and what it becomes under a dictatorial regime? Let me inclined decisively for the second one.
