La vicenda è raccontata in prima persona dal condannato a morte, di cui non sappiamo il nome. Attraverso le pagine del suo diario, scopriamo che ha una moglie e una figlia, la piccola Marie. Ci racconta la vita nel carcere di Bicêtre. Ci descrive i carcerieri, e tutti coloro che hanno il compito di portarlo al patibolo, quasi come persone gentili e amorevoli. Di contrappeso, le folle urlanti, che vogliono vedere il sangue.
È un libro angosciante, le ultime pagine, le pagine dove con la carretta viene portato fino al patibolo, sono le più forti. Inutile ritardare il momento, chiedere la grazia, perché il re non passerà, non arriverà nessuna lettera a salvarlo.
Hugo scrisse questo libro a 27 anni, nel 1829. Ma l'ultima esecuzione pubblica con la ghigliottina avvenne ancora nel 1939, e l'ultima in totale addirittura nel 1977.

How our Cesare Beccaria, that in his "On Crimes and Punishment" condemned the death penalty, so Victor Hugo did, in France. And this short novel represents his way to protest and to ask for his abolishment.
The story is told in first person by the anonymous condemned man. In the pages of his diary, we discover that he has a wife and a daughter, the little Marie. He tells us about his life in the Bicêtre's prison. He describes the prison officers, and all those leading him in the executioner's block, how they look kind and lovely.
It's a distressing book, the last pages especially, when he arrives to the block, are the strongest. It's worthless trying to delay the moment, ask for the legal pardon, because The King is not going to pass through there by chance, there is no letter to save him.
Hugo wrote this book when he was 27 years old, in the 1829. But the last public execution with the guillotine will be only in 1939, and the very last one even in 1977.
