Questa è la sua storia, dalla nascita a Filadelfia nella ricchissima e importante famiglia dei Whittaker, dalla fanciullezza fino all'età matura, gli studi botanici, l'amore per Ambrose Pyke, il viaggio a Tahiti, l'Olanda. Alma attraversa novant'anni di storia degli uomini e della scienza, studia, diventa non solo colta ma anche saggia. E' una figura immensa. Sfortunata in amore, ma caparbia e testarda nel cercare la verità, nello studio del mondo. Non c'è verità che la spaventi, non c'è ostacolo che non voglia superare. E non si accontenta in un nessun caso di una spiegazione che non la soddisfi.
Figure femminili potenti, come Beatrix Whittaker e Hanneke de Groot. Olandesi razionali e senza grilli per la testa, colte e testarde. E poi Prudence, la bellissima sorella di lei, il cui personaggio Alma non capisce fino in fondo pur amandola moltissimo.
Ho adorato Alma. Ho ritrovato molto di lei, quel suo voler andare a fondo delle cose, quella sua smania di conoscere, di vedere, di sapere. Quel suo lavorare bene da sola, precisa e attenta ai dettagli. Vedere e saper riconoscere l'importanza anche in piante modeste come i muschi. Anche quella sua sfortuna in amore, quell'imparare a comunicare ma non ad ottenere quello che si vuole.
Ci ho messo sette mesi a finirlo. Ma ne è valsa la pena solo per conoscere un personaggio come Alma.

I needed seven months to read this book. Taken, abandoned, taken again, abandoned again and then... never more abandoned. The history of Henry has been an hurdle to overtake. But just Alma made her entrance, I loved her and I didn't want leave her anymore. This is her story, from her birth in Philadephia in the wealthy and important Whittaker's family, from her adolescence to her oldness, her botanical studies, her love for Ambrose Pyke, her stay in Tahiti and Holland. Alma goes throught ninety years of history of humans and science, she studies, she becomes not only cultured but also wise. She is a huge character. Unlucky in love, but stubborn and obstinate in searching the truth, in the study of the world. No truth she is afraid of, no hurdle she doesn't want to overtake. And she isn't please in any way of a too general answer.
Power female characters, as Beatrix Whittaker and Hanneke de Groot. Rational dutch women, with strange ideas in the head, cultured and stubborn. And then Prudence, the beautiful sister, but a character who Alma doesn't understand entirely, even if loving her much.
I loved Alma. I found a lot myself in her, her will to see it through everything, her yearning to know. Her preference in working alone, precise and careful to details. Looking at and being able to recognise the importance even of humble plants as the mosses. Even her bad luck in love, that learning how to communicate but without being able to achieve what or who she wants.
I needed seven months to read it. But it's worth the effort just to meet a character like Alma.
