"Una donna spezzata" è una raccolta di tre racconti. Quello che dà il titolo al libro, nonchè il più lungo e il primo nella mia edizione, è sicuramente il più importante.
Monique è una casalinga sposata da molti anni con Maurice. Hanno due figlie, Colette, sposata con un uomo semplice che la ama molto, e Lucienne, vive a New York, forse più arida ma più concreta. Monique scopre ben presto la relazione del marito con Noellie, avvocato, giovane donna arrivista e un po' snob. Ma Noellie è tutto quello che Monique non è. Giovane, in carriera, moderna. Monique è completamente dipendente dal marito, non ha più lavorato. Ed è questo il punto centrale. Quando un uomo ci lascia, se siamo troppo dipendenti da lui, non ci rimane niente. Abbiamo paura del futuro. Mai concedere questo potere all'altra persona. Mai lasciare la nostra vita in mano a qualcun altro.
Il secondo racconto tratta di una studiosa di circa sessant'anni, sposata con uno scienziato, che vede traditi i propri ideali dal figlio. Philippe abbandona la strada scelta per lui dalla madre, l'insegnamento, per un posto meglio pagato al Ministero della Cultura. Causa che fa scatenare la crisi, in quanto la famiglia ritiene l'attuale governo alla stregua di un regime.
Il terzo racconto è... strano. Un monologo un po' isterico. Un fiume di parole. Murielle parla a ruota libera. E' la notte di Capodanno e non riesce a dormire per il rumore nelle strade e nei palazzi vicini. Ricorda la sua vita, i suoi amori, la famiglia. E soprattutto, la morte della figlia, Sylvie. L'altro figlio, Francis, preso in custodia dal padre, Tristan, e già con qualche accento di comportamento da damerino.

"The Womand Destroyed" is a collection of three tales. The one that the book is named after, the longest and first in my edition, is the most important.
Monique is an housewife, married with Maurice. They have two daughters, Colette, married with a good man who loves her much, and Lucienne, New Yorker, maybe more arid but more concrete too. Monique soon discovers the relationship of her husband with Noellie, lawyer, upstart young woman and a little snob. But Noellie is all that Monique is not. Young, has a career, modern. Monique is completely dependent on her husband, she no longer worked. And this is the central point. When a man leaves us, if we are too dependent on him, there is nothing left. We are afraid of the future. Never give this power to another person. Never leave our lives in the hands of someone else.
The second story is about a scholar in his sixties, married to a scientist who sees her ideals betrayed by his son. Philippe abandons the path chosen for him by his mother, teaching, for a better paid job to the Ministry of Culture. It does trigger the crisis, as the family thinks at the current government like a regime.
The third story is... strange. A little hysterical monologue. A river of words. Murielle speaks freewheeling. It's New Year's Eve and she cannot sleep for the noise in the streets and nearby buildings. She recalls her life, her loves, her family. And above all, the death of her daughter, Sylvie. The other son, Francis, taken into custody by the father, Tristan, and already with a dandy's behavior.
