Tutto bene, tutti tranquilli finché... Edie inizia a mangiare spropositatamente, per noia e per la sensazione di essere invisibile, perché il cibo è un posto magnifico dove nascondersi. Richard non ce la fa più, e la lascia. L'equilibrio familiare si sgretola.
Andando avanti con le pagine, impariamo a conoscere meglio tutti i protagonisti. E sono dei personaggi mai in bianco e nero, mai buoni o cattivi. Sono esseri umani quelli dipinti dalla scrittrice, con i loro pregi e i loro difetti. Richard non è il mostro che lascia la moglie che sta male, Emily non è solo un'adolescente antipatica, Edie non è solo una sciatta grassona interessata solo a mangiare.
Un ritratto di una famiglia e delle sue dinamiche, della vita, delle scelte che si fanno. Un bel romanzo, scritto bene, una scrittura fluida. Molto bello.

Here you are The Middlestein, a typical American Jewish family. The parents, Edie and Richard, a former-lawyer her and a pharmacist him. Their son and daughter, the stubborn Robin and the easy-going Benny, married with Rachelle, the princess. Their children, the twins Josh and Emily, how much he is educated and kind, she is a typical lunatic teenager.
Everything is fine, as long as... Edie starts to eat excessively, because she is bored and for a desire of invisibility, because food is a fantastic place where hide herself. Richard can't make it anymore, and file for the divorce. The family balance is broken.
Going on with the reading, we learn better to know every character. And they aren't characters in black-and-white, they aren't good or bad. The writer tells about human people, with their strenghts and weaknesses. Richard isn't the monster who leave alone his sick wife, Emily isn't just an annoying teenager, Edie isn't just a shabby fat woman who is interested just to eat.
A family's portrait, its dinamycs, life, choices. A good novel, well written, a flowing writing. Beautiful.
