Ecco perché il mare é protagonista in tutti i suoi romanzi. In questo "La linea d'ombra" rievoca, attingendo in buona parte dalla sua esperienza di vita, i primi anni della sua vita in mare come capitano. Il protagonista, infatti, é un uomo che si vede affidare per la prima volta una nave come capitano. L'equipaggio è dotato di uomini eccellenti, tra cui spiccano il cuoco, Ransome, colui che si prende cura di tutto l'equipaggio, con la calma dovuta, e il secondo Burns, uomo particolare, custode dei segreti e delle leggende della nave, quasi magico.
Un libro bello, interessante anche per chi non è troppo appassionato di racconti di mare. Meno forte rispetto al più famoso "Cuore di Tenebra", ma forse lo preferisco!
