"Il racconto dell'ancella" é un romanzo distopico, ovvero descrive una società immaginaria e spaventosa. Ambientato negli Stati Uniti, il paese é diventato una sorta di dittatura religiosa. Tutto é regolato secondo la Bibbia e le donne sono quelle che maggiormente subiscono il nuovo stato di cose. Le donne come la protagonista, di cui non conosciamo il vero nome, vengono spogliate di ogni denaro e assegnate come Ancelle, la cui funzione è ridotta alla sola procreazione. Il loro compito è rimanere incinte dei Comandanti a cui sono assegnate. Ogni persona all'interno della gerarchia ha una sua funzione, e quindi troviamo le Mogli, le Marte, le Zie. E poi i Comandanti, i Custodi.
Il lettore entra in questo mondo e piano piano si rende conto dell'assurdità. Il finale viene lasciato aperto, non sappiamo che fine farà la protagonista. Riuscirà a scappare o verrà punita? Il mondo si salverà? Una risposta potrebbe venire da una sorta di appendice, in cui si immagina che, molti secoli dopo, le registrazioni di Difred vengono scoperte e analizzate, e presentate a un convegno.
Ma la cosa che davvero ha reso questo romanzo così inquietante è che... Potrebbe succedere davvero. Quante volte abbiamo visto nei telegiornali scene di paesi in cui il fondamentalismo ha preso il potere? La vita delle persone viene regolamentata, le donne ne soffrono sempre il peso maggiore, non c'è più posto per l'allegria e la libertà.
Ci sarebbe davvero bisogno che questo libro venisse letto in tutte le scuole, che si formasse una coscienza comune che impedisca che tutto ciò accada. Che certe assurdità non si concretizzino.

I firmly believe that this is the most beautiful and disturbing book I've ever read.
"The Handmaid's Tale" is a dystopian novel, or rather describes an imaginary and frightful society. Set in the United States, the country becomes a fundamentalist theocracy. Everything is regulated by the Bible and women suffers the most in this new state of play. Women like the protagonist, whom we don't know the real name, are deprived of their money and assigned as Handmaids, with the only function of procreate. Their main duty is getting pregnant with their Commanders and bearing children for the Wives. Every person in the hierarchy has their own duty, and so there are the Wives, the Marthas, the Aunts. And men are Commanders and Guardians, among the others.
The reader enters in this world and little by little realizes the absurdity. The final is open, we don't know what is going to happen to the protagonist. Will she save herself or be punished? The world will be saved? An answer might come from the epilogue, "a partial transcript of the proceedings of the Twelfth Symposium on Gileadean Studies", on the occasion of a conference when the recordings of Offred are discovered and studied.
But what makes this book so disturbing is that... it might happen for real. How much time we watched at the newcast stories of lives in countries where the fundamentalism has got the power? People's life is under strict control, women struggles the most, there is no more place for freedom and glee.
We would really need this book to be read in all schools, form a common consciousness that prevents this from happening. That certain absurdities do not become real.
