Questo il quadro sociale in cui si svolgono le vicende di questo romanzo. Belgravia, ancora oggi il quartiere più costoso di Londra, culla dell'aristocrazia, ne é lo sfondo.
Un segreto tra due famiglie, i Trenchard, borghesi parecchio arricchiti grazie al senso degli affari del capofamiglia James, e i Brockenhurst, famiglia della più alta aristocrazia, fedeli sostenitori del divario tra le classi. Un legame specialmente tra le due donne, Anne e Caroline, due donne fortissime, toste, intelligenti, pronte a tutto per difendere l'onore e la propria famiglia. E poi Charles, il misterioso uomo nato e cresciuto in una piccola parrocchia rurale e venuto a Londra, moderno uomo d'affari con idee di commercio in espansione.
Ricorda tantissimo Downton Abbey, la creatura più celebrata di Fellowes. Ma é quello che ci piace e in cui l'autore é maestro.
Una conoscenza fin nel minimo dettaglio di acconciatura ci trasporta direttamente in quel mondo. I colpi di scena sono sapientemente centellinati, appena ci si avvicina troppo, si cambia subito scenario, lasciando il lettore con il fiato corto e il desiderio spasmodico di continuare la lettura. In questo, grande colpo di maestro il far uscire il libro prima un capitolo alla volta in ebook. Per me una enorme sofferenza non poter leggere tutti i capitoli in una notte sola. Ma far crescere l'attesa e insieme l'attenzione è da geni del male. E Fellowes decisamente lo é.
Un romanzo bellissimo. Se amate l'Inghilterra, vi affascina il sistema delle classi, se volete leggere una storia scritta magnificamente e appassionante, questo é il libro per voi.

This story remembers a lot Downton Abbey, Fellowes' most celebrated creature. But this is what we like and the writer is a master in it.
A knowledge to the minimum details even of hairstyles brings us directly in that world. The twists are wisely nursed, as soon as it is too close, Fellowes abruptly changes scenery, leaving the reader short of breath and with a strong desire to keep going with the reading. In this, a big coup has been publishing every chapter once each in ebook format. For me is a huge struggle not being able to read the entire book in one night. But making the expectations raise and the attention too, is worthy of an evil genius. And Fellowes, he is, indeed.
A beautiful novel. If you love England, are fascinated by the class system, want to read a story written magnificently, this is the perfect book.
