Mi aspettavo forse qualcosa di diverso, a partire dal titolo che lascia immaginare la Beard che spiega e rilegge i grandi classici della letteratura antica.
Mentre invece è una collezione di saggi, la maggior parte dei quali recensioni di studi di critica di altri studiosi dell'antichità.
Attraverso il commento del singolo testo di critica, comunque, la Beard ci guida attraverso il mondo antico attraverso figure chiave, come gli imperatori romani e i loro sudditi, Boudicca e Cleopatra, Asterix e i grandi poeti tragici.
Un viaggio nel mondo antico visto da diverse angolazioni.
Credo che per leggere un libro del genere bisogna quanto meno avere un minimo di passione per l'argomento. Non è uno di quei libri che leggete per caso e che vi fanno scoprire un mondo che vi appassiona. Se vi piace già un minimo ok, altrimenti vi annoierete parecchio e tenderete a saltare pagine se non direttamente i capitoli.
Ma per chi è un minimo di casa in questo mondo, è un libro interessante.
Adesso sono ancora più curiosa di leggere gli altri suoi libri, soprattutto quello sul mondo femminile, Women & Power. A Manifesto, per capire come scrive quando non parla dei libri di altri studiosi.

As much as I know Mary Beard as a scholar and historian, this is the first book I've ever read by her.
I was expecting something different, starting with the title that lets us imagine the Beard explaining and re-reading the great classics of ancient literature.
While it is instead a collection of essays, most of which are reviews of critical studies by other scholars of antiquity.
Through the commentary of critical works, however, Beard guides us through the ancient world through key figures, such as the Roman emperors and their subjects, Boudicca and Cleopatra, Asterix and the great tragic poets.
A journey into the ancient world seen from different angles.
I think that to read a book like this you need at least to have a minimum of passion for the subject. It is not one of those books that you read by chance and that make you discover a world that you are passionate about. If you already like a minimum ok, otherwise you will get bored a lot and you will tend to skip pages if not directly the chapters.
But for those who are a minimum of home in this world, it is an interesting book.
Now I'm even more curious to read his other books, especially the one about the women's world, Women & Power. A Manifesto, to understand how she writes when she doesn't write about the books of other scholars.
