Geraldine, la vittima, si è chiusa nel mutismo e non parla. Il giudice Coutts, il marito, è in bilico tra il desiderio di vendetta e il rispetto della legge. Il loro figlio Joe, voce narrante, tra spavalderia e incoscienza, decide di prendere in mano la situazione.
Ho apprezzato molto l'immergermi in un mondo che non conosco affatto, quello di una riserva indiana. Un mondo con i suoi rituali, le sue tradizioni ma anche sito nel mondo moderno e più vicino a noi di quanto immaginiamo. Forse un po' lento, con tendenze alla descrizione minuta che appesantiscono la narrazione.
Insomma, un libro interessante, comunque piacevole da leggere.

This is one of the many novels I've read for the advice of a friend. There are topics on which little or nothing I had reflected, such as the judicial process of a crime like rape in a community like that of an Indian reservation. The points in common and those opposed by the two police and jurisprudence. But above all, the clash between the two worlds, the internal one and the one outside the reservation.
Geraldine, the victim, has closed in mutism and does not speak. Judge Coutts, her husband, is poised between a desire for revenge and respect for the law. Their son Joe, the first person narrator, between cocksureness and unconsciousness, decides to take matters into his own hands.
I enjoyed immerging myself in a world that I do not know at all, that of an Indian reservation. A world with its rituals, its traditions but also located in the modern world and closer to us than we imagine. The book perhaps is a bit slow, with tendencies to the minute description that weighs down the narrative.
In short, an interesting book, however, pleasant to read.
