Sono infatti loro, e soprattutto le sorelle Mitford, il centro dell'attenzione. Belle, aristocratiche, eccentriche, sicure di sè, rappresentano la somma delle caratteristiche dell'aristocrazia britannica. I loro genitori? Snob, of course. Ma molto attenti alla crescita della loro prole.
Mrs Fellowes le ritrae ancora molto giovani, la maggiore delle sorelle, Nancy, non ancora maggiorenne e Deborah (Debo), la più piccola, appena nata. Non sono ancora gli anni delle sfavillanti "Mitford sisters", ma già se ne intravedono le prime avvisaglie. Nancy diventa amica di Louisa, una delle nanny della casa, e insieme investigheranno sull'assassinio del titolo. I personaggi di contorno, e Louisa, sono inventati, mentre le sorelle e la loro vita, sono assolutamente reali.
Il racconto del loro modo di vivere, la società e le sue regole in cui sono inserite, i rapporti con le persone all'esterno della casa, i rapporti tra di loro e tra padroni e servitù, è talmente vivo nella narrazione che sembra di poter girare per Asthall Manor con loro.
Anche se non siete appassionati di gialli come me, avete tanti buoni motivi per leggere questo libro.

In general I am not one who reads crime stories, but in this case I was happy to do it. Not just for the "crime" story by itself, which is by itself appreciable. But above all, and personally it is the reason that led me to read this book, the reconstruction of a world of English aristocratic families and their fascinating members. In this case, the protagonist family has really existed and is among the most fascinating: the Mitfords!
They are in fact, and especially the Mitford sisters, the center of attention. Beautiful, aristocratic, eccentric, self-confident, they represent the sum of the characteristics of the British aristocracy. Their parents? Snob, of course. But very attentive to the growth of their offspring.
Mrs Fellowes portrays them still very young, the eldest of the sisters, Nancy, not yet of age, and Deborah (Debo), the youngest, newly born. These are not yet the years of the sparkling "Mitford sisters", but we can already see the first signs of it. Nancy becomes a friend of Louisa, one of the house nannies, and together they will investigate the assassination of the title. The side characters, and Louisa, are invented, while the sisters and their lives are absolutely real.
The story of their way of life, the society and its rules in which they are inserted, the relationships with people outside the house, the relationships between them and between masters and servants, is so alive in the narration that it seems to be able to live at Asthall Manor with them.
Even if you are not fond of crime stories like me, you have many good reasons to read this book.
