It took me almost three years before I decided to read this book. Three years, and especially in the last period, of people of whom I have a deep intellectual respect, who repeated how incredibly important this book was. They were right.
As soon as the reading is over and I am still shaken by the power of the narration, by the terrible story of a woman, by the situation of total subjection to the father and then to the husband of the women of that period, women who even had to ask for marital permission to collect their sums of money.
There are so many levels of interpretation for this book but all of them are important and interesting.
The life of a woman who is not only a thing owned by the males of the family, but is above all a thinking human being with her own desires and her own will. A woman who realizes that motherhood, even if it is an all-encompassing experience, took away a lot from women in a total sacrifice of herself for another life.
And Sibilla Aleramo, in addition to love for her son, also had love for life, for freedom, for culture. She wanted a full life. But she had to give up her son with immense suffering, to abandon that family life that oppressed her and go, finally, to live her life.
An important story, an immense woman. A book to read.
