In questo saggio breve ma molto interessante, Eva Cantarella, notissima grecista, risponde alla domanda su come a partire dai greci, la differenza tra uomo e donna sia diventata inferiorità della donna rispetto all'uomo. Attraverso una spiegazione filosofica e mitologica, vediamo come si è formato l'inizio di quella discriminazione che ci siamo portate fino a giorni nostri e che ancora è presente. Dalla nascita di Pandora, la prima donna, custode del vaso con tutte le disgrazie e sul fondo, la speranza; dalle voci di Aristotele e di Socrate che riflettono sui ruoli dei due sessi; al diritto sull'adulterio e sull'eredità; e soprattutto, sulla mancanza di una educazione di comunicazione delle donne che finiva per confinarle in un gineceo, non perché ne fossero costrette ma perchè non avevano gli strumenti per relazionarsi con il mondo esterno dove quindi erano padroni assoluti gli uomini.
Ovviamente, impossibile comprendere tutto in un libro di meno di 100 pagine, ma è sicuramente una ottima base da cui poi allargare il discorso, scritto in modo da rendere la materia molto interessante.

In this short but very interesting essay, Eva Cantarella, a well-known Italian classicist, answers the question of how, starting with the Greeks, the difference between man and woman has become the inferiority of woman compared to man. Through a philosophical and mythological explanation, we see how was formed the beginning of that discrimination that we have carried up to the present day and which is still present. From the birth of Pandora, the first woman, keeper of the box with all the misfortunes and hope at the bottom; from the voices of Aristotle and Socrates reflecting on the roles of the sexes; the law on adultery and inheritance; and above all, on the lack of a education at communicate for women who ended up confining them in a harem, not because they were forced to but because they did not have the tools to relate to the outside world where men were therefore absolute masters.
Obviously, it is impossible to understand everything in a book of less than 100 pages, but it is certainly an excellent basis from which to expand the discussion, written in a way that makes the subject very interesting.
