Nelly Boxall é la protagonista di questa storia, di cui l'autrice inventa di aver trovato il suo diario. Nelly é meglio conosciuta come una delle domestiche di casa Woolf, di Leonard e Virginia Woolf. Vi sono due piani interessanti in questo libro: la storia di Nelly e di quella dei lavoratori di quel periodo, costretti a orari massacranti e vite difficili, e quella di Virginia Woolf, la signora, centro di un gruppo di intellettuali moderni e libertini, dove ognuno crede di essere molto moderno ma in realtà tiene ben presente le divisioni di classe. Da corollario a questa storia, il gruppo di Bloomsbury, Vita Sackville-West, Leonard Woolf, tutti loro.
Le due donne si scontrano spesso e volentieri, pur essendo più simili di quello che entrambe credono. Ma il coltello dalla parte del manico ce l'ha Virginia. É lei la padrona. Ma nel rapporto con Nelly scopriamo che Virginia era una snob. Una che sentiva fortemente le differenze sociali. Una che non riusciva nemmeno a prendere in considerazione il fatto che una serva potesse condividere le sue stesse idee.
Il libro é molto interessante, pieno di ricostruzioni sulla società inglese di quel periodo e sul mitico Bloomsbury Group. Non solo interessante ma anche scritto benissimo e piacevole da leggere. Era da molto che volevo leggerlo e non ne sono rimasta assolutamente delusa. Bello.

Nelly Boxall is the main character of this story, and the writer invents she found her diary. Nelly is better known to be one of the servants in the house of the Woolf's family, Leonard and Virginia Woolf. There are two interesting grounds: the story of Nelly and the home workers in that period of time, exhausting work times and hard lives, and the story of Virginia Woolf, the lady, center of the Bloomsbury Group, modern and loose people, where everyone think of being very modern but actually the class system is still strong in their life. Corollary to this story, the components of the group, Vita Sackville-West, Lytton Stratchey, Leonard Woolf...
The two women very often fight, even if they are more similar than what they think. But the power is in Virginia's hands. She is the lady of the house. But, related to Nelly, we discover Virginia as a snob. She strongly feel the social differences. She couldn't even imagine that a servant would share her same ideas.
The book is very interesting, full of reconstructions about the English society and the Bloomsbury Group. Not just interesting but also written very well and pleasant to read. It was a long time I wanted to read it and it doesn't disappoint me at all.
