Lo erano. Decisamente.
Sicuramente loro erano molto più aperte rispetto alle contemporanee signore inglesi, ma certe espressioni sono assolutamente inequivocabili.
Ma oltre all'aspetto romantico, la loro era anche e soprattutto una complicità a livello mentale. Si capivano, si intendevano, facevano lo stesso lavoro. Vita appare più spontanea e selvaggia, Virginia più "tranquilla" e signorile. Due donne con una padronanza del linguaggio ai massimi livelli, due donne che scrivono lettere di una tale eleganza e bellezza e perfezione, che molti scrittori attuali si taglierebbero le mani per poter raggiungere certe vette.

The curiosity of reading this book is a consequence of another reading about Virginia Woolf, the novel by Mrs Gimenez-Bartlett about Nelly, the housemaid of Woolf's house. The writer give us to understand that it's not sure that Vita and Virginia had a serious relationship, because were both part of a world where was pretty common to address someone in a very loving way. And so, I decided to examine this question thoroughly. Were they or not?
They were. Indeed.
For sure they were more free than the comtemporary English ladies, but certain words are absolutely unmistakable. Beyond the romantic part, they share above all an intellectual complicity. They fully understand each other, maybe also because they both write. Vita looks more spontaneous and wild, Virginia more "quiet" and ladylike. Two women with such mastery of words at the top, two women who write letters of such elegance and beauty and perfection, so much that a lot of modern writers would cut their hands to reach that level.
A beautiful letters collection, to enjoy the beauty of the writing and get an inquiring glimpse to the daily routine if two extraordinary women.
