Non si può non riconoscere lo stile e il modo di scrivere di Goethe. Certi discorsi, certi atteggiamenti, certi tratti non possono che riportare alla memoria il Werther e quell'atmosfera.
Anche qui, amori difficili, travagliati, combattuti. Anche qui, "affinità elettive" tra amanti condannati all'infelicità. Grande amante della chimica e dei fenomeni naturali, riprese l'idea del romanzo proprio da quei mondi.
All'inizio del libro, troviamo l'apparentemente perfetta coppia formata da Carlotta ed Edoardo. Ricchi e generosi, i due coniugi ospitano nella loro dimora Il Capitano, stimata figura, e Ottilia, nipote di Carlotta. L'arrivo di questi personaggi spariglia le carte in tavola. Carlotta e il Capitano si ritrovano uniti dalla stessa pacatezza e dalla stessa indole tranquilla e razionale, mentre Edoardo si infiamma d'amore per la giovane Ottilia. Ma in amore e nei romanzi non tutto é sempre facile, e ci saranno da versare lacrime...
Bellissimo romanzo, che sembra scorrere tranquillo ma in realtà é un tumulto di sentimenti.

After "The sorrows of young Werther", I had such a craving to read something else by Goethe. "The Elective Affinities" was a missing classic in my bookshelves and I've immediately filled this gap. The style and writing of Goethe is immediately recognisable.
Some subjects, some attitudes, some things remember us the Werther's novel and its atmosphere.
Here too, troubled and upset love. Here too, Elective Affinities between lovers convicted of unhappiness. Goethe had a huge interest for chemistry and natural events, from there he had the idea of this novel.
At the beginning, we meet the apparently perfect couple of Charlotte and Eduard. Rich and benevolent, the two spouses host in their house the Captain, respected man, and Ottilie, Charlotte's niece. These characters will throw into disorder their quiet life. Charlotte and the Captain are united by the same quietness and the same calm and rational nature, while Eduard falls desperately in love with Ottilie. But in love and in novels nobody is easy, and there will be tears...
Beuatiful novel, looks like flowing quiet but it's really the roar of a overflowing river.
