Era un po' di tempo che non leggevo qualcosa del Bardo Shakespeare. É una mia grande passione, avevo addirittura il poster di Shakespeare sopra il mio letto, poster comprato alla Folger Library di Washington DC, luogo a lui dedicato nel cuore della capitale degli Stati Uniti. Ma ammetto che era un po' che non leggevo qualcosa di suo. La spinta mi é stata data dal fatto che in questi mesi, a Londra, é in scena la rappresentazione proprio del Coriolano, attore principale Tom Hiddleston, ovvero attualmente il mio attore preferito. Come avrei potuto non vedere in questo un segno che dovevo colmare questa lacuna e leggere la tragedia? La vigilia di Natale me lo sono regalato e la notte di Natale l'ho divorato. Non avrei potuto fermarmi neanche volendo.
I cinque atti svolgono la storia di Caio Marcio Coriolano, generale romano e nemico numero uno dei Volsci. Dopo la battaglia che lo vede vincitore e tornare a Roma in trionfo, viene proposto come possibile console. Il popolo intende votarlo a gran numero, ma Bruto e Sicinio, tribuni della plebe, lo volgono contro Coriolano che, non avvezzo a essere un personaggio pubblico, per la sua sincerità viene accusato di essere troppo orgoglioso e di reputare la plebe inferiore e, di più, essere il responsabile di tutte le leggi inique promulgate contro di loro.
Esiliato da Roma, Coriolano si allea con i Volsci per ottenere vendetta ma, di fronte alla madre e alla moglie non riesce a portare avanti il suo piano e per questo, giudicato come traditore dai Volsci, verrà assassinato.
La grandezza del personaggio di Coriolano sta nella sua sincerità, nel suo non riuscire ad essere falso e fare quelle che oggi chiameremmo "public relations". A lui non importa essere amato, vuole essere l'ottimo soldato che é e servire la sua città con la spada, non con le belle parole e gli usi della diplomazia.
Il fatto che Shakespeare riesca ad essere sempre attuale e contemporaneo, come quello che descrive possa essere riferibile a ogni epoca e a ogni società, é questa la sua grandezza. La potenza dei personaggi, l'animo umano scandagliato con una profondità impressionante, la forza delle sue parole sono ancora insuperate e insuperabili.

It was a lot of time I wasn't reading something by Shakespeare. He is a big passion of mine, I have his poster in my room, bought at the Folger Library in Washington DC, place dedicated to him in the heart of the capital of the United States. But I have to admit that it was some time I wasn't reading something by him. I finally take the decision to read it because, in the past few months, in London, is on stage the performance of Coriolanus, the main actor is Tom Hiddleston, on of my favourite actors. How could I ignore this sign from the destiny and not reading the tragedy? I bought it the Christmas Eve and the Christmas night I read it. I couldn't stop reading.
The five acts tell about the story of Caio Marcio Coriolanus, Roman General and Number One enemy of Volscians. After he had won the war and came back in Rome in triumph, he is suggested as new Consul. The population wants him, but Bruto and Sicinio, tribunes for the plebs, turn it against Coriolanus that, not used to be a public personality, for his honesty is charged to be too proud and think the plebs as inferior and, more, being guilty of every raw law against them.
Banished by Rome, Coriolanus allies with Volscians to get his justice but, in front of his mother and wife is not able to go on with his plan and for this reason, charged as traitor by the Volscians, has been killed.
The greatness of Coriolanus is in his honesty, he can't be false or make "public relations". He doesn't care to be loved, he just wants to be the good soldier he is and be at the service of his city with his sword, not with kind words and diplomacy.
Shakespeare is always current and contemporary, everything he describes can be related to every century and society, this is his greatness. The power of his character, the human soul plumbed with a strikind depht, the power of his words are still unequalled.
