Scoprì dopo un po' che di questo romanzo ne esisteva anche il seguito... ed anche se non mi era piaciuto eccomi qui, perchè a resistere senza sapere come continuava la storia non ci riuscivo proprio. E quindi non potevo non prendere (in biblioteca, spendere altri soldi no!) questo libro e leggere cosa succede dopo.
Sono passati otto anni dall'ultima pagina del precedente libro. Rose è una donna in carriera, i figli sono ormai grandi. Un giorno, fulmine a ciel sereno, Ben, l'ex marito, torna. E chiede di regolarizzare la loro situazione... definisce che Rose, seguendo il suo infallibile istinto, capisce perfettamente, sottintesi inclusi.
Il lietissimo fine è ovviamente scontato e devo ammettere che avevo già capito qualcosa dalle prime pagine.
Probabilmente mi è piaciuto poco di più rispetto all'altro, ma non tanto da dare una stella in più. Praticamente non fa altro che guidare, bere tazze di tè e psicoanalizzare fino all'ultimo i suoi figli... insomma, abbastanza noiosetta. Il marito è sempre uno stronzo di prima categoria. Gli unici che si salvano sono forse i due figli maggiori, ovviamente molto diversi perché due figli che si assomigliano non li ho mai trovati, che mi ricordi, in nessun romanzo. La figlia minore invece... molto "niente di che", come lei stessa avrebbe definito una simile controparte.
E forse "niente di che" è il termine appropriato anche per questo romanzo. E adesso basta!

As you read in this blog recently, I've read the novel "In the Beginning", by Mrs Dunne too. I didn't like it so much, so identical to a lot of other novels, and I gave it just a few stars.
Then I discovered that she wrote a sequel... and yes, I didn't like the first one, because I can't stop myself wanting to know how it goes on. And so I got it on loan in the library (of course, I'm not spending money again on this story!) and read the sequel.
Eight years later, Rose is a businesswoman, the children are grown-up. But, one day, bolt from the blue, Ben, her former husband, comes back. And he wants to regularize their situation... Rose knows istinctively what he really means, insinuations included.
The very happy endind is of course predicted and I must admit I already knew it from the first pages.
Probably I liked it more than the first one, but it doesn't deserve one star more. Essentially, she doesn't do anything else but driving, drinking cups of tea and psychoanalyzing her children... so, a bit boring. Ben is always an asshole of first category. The best characters are maybe the two eldest sons, of course very different one from the other. The daughter... a lot "nothing new".
And maybe "nothing new" is the appropriate definition again for this novel. And now... enough!
