Il riassunto é veloce: il racconto della giornata del 16 giugno 1904 trascorsa dal protagonista, il signor Leopold Bloom. Esce di casa, incontra persone, va a un funerale, pranza, torna a casa e offre un tè all'altro protagonista, Stephen Dedalus. Questo il romanzo in maniera molto stringata.
Da dove posso iniziare per dire quanto non mi é piaciuto? Facciamo che dico le cose che mi sono piaciute. Mi piace il protagonista, Mr Bloom. Intelligente e attento. Mi piace il quadro dell'Irlanda contemporanea.
Quello che non mi é piaciuto. La difficoltà nel leggerlo. Uno sforzo tremendo. Questo continuo cambiare registro stilistico, che ho odiato in Esercizi di stile di Queneau, figurati se non lo odio qui che dà una sensazione di disordinato e rende ancora più difficile la lettura. Detto chiaramente, mi sembra un "provarci troppo" a essere originale. Ma in questo caso il genio è superato dal disordine e dalla difficoltà di lettura.
Detto tutto questo, pensavo di essere nel torto, di essere io a non avere capito la storia. Poi trovo un estratto del diario di Virginia Woolf. Riporto testuali parole:
"Ho finito l'Ulisse, e lo ritengo una pallottola spuntata. C'é del genio, credo; ma di rango inferiore. Il libro é scomposto. Disgustoso. Pretenzioso. Un grande scrittore, voglio dire, rispetta troppo la letteratura per perdersi in trucchetti a star lì a stupire con le sue acrobazie. Non l'ho letto con attenzione; e solo una volta; ed é molto oscuro."
A parte che io invece ho messo tutta l'attenzione che potevo nel leggerlo, condivido e sottoscrivo. Virginia ha parlato. E io con lei.

Called one of the most important book in modern literature, a novel that shook the literary world. Well, I met a few books like this one. And... lucky me!!
The synopsis is easy: the story of a day, June the 16th, 1904, spent by the main character, mr Leopold Bloom. He goes out, meets people, attends a funeral, has lunch, comes back home and brews a cup of tea for the other main character, Stephen Dedalus. This is the novel in its short way.
Where do I begin to tell why and how I don't like it? In the beginning, I tell the things I like. I love the main character, Mr Bloom. Smart and careful. I like the picture of the contemporary Irland.
What I don't like. The difficulty in reading it. A huge struggle. He keeps changing register, a way that I hated in "Exercises in Style" by Queneau, and I hate it here with that chaos making the reading even more difficult. To be clearly honest, looks like Joyce tries too desperately to be original. In this case, the brilliance is hidden by the chaos and the reading's struggle.
At the end of the pages, I thought I was wrong, maybe I didn't understand the story. But then, I've found a piece by Virginia Woolf's diary. She wrote:
"I finished Ulysses, & think it is a mis-fire. Genius it has I think; but of the inferior water. The book is diffuse. It is brackish. It is pretentious. It is underbred, not only in the obvious sense, but in the literary sense. A first rate writer, I mean, respects writing too much to be tricky; startling; doing stunts. I have not read it carefully; & only once; & it is very obscure."
Unlike her I've read it very carefully, but I share her thought and endorse it. Virginia spoke. And me.

James Joyce è uno degli autori che temo di più. Di suo ho letto solo, per ragioni scolastiche, Dubliners, che onestamente non ho gradito molto e di cui ricordo davvero poco. So che arriverà il momento in cui leggerò l'Ulisse e penso che lo farò senza preconcetti – nonostante la mia cieca fiducia nei giudizi di Virginia. Il tuo giudizio non è incoraggiante… sei stata brava a portarlo a termine nonostante non ti stesse andando giù!
