L'autore le scrisse nel 1928, dopo Il Grande Gatsby. Nella sua mente sarebbero dovuti confluire in un romanzo, mentre rimasero racconti a sè.
Basil e Josephine vengono seguiti fino ai 17 anni, la loro crescita emotiva e sentimentale, i loro amori, le loro amicizie.
Quello che li differenzia, e qui Scott mi perdonerà, è la profondità dell'esplorazione psicologica. Probabilmente l'autore, da uomo, conosce meglio la psiche di un ragazzo, e si vede. Basil è più dettagliato, più riscontrabile. Le storie di Josephine sono un po' più stereotipate, come se per tratteggiarle si avalesse di racconti fatti da altre persone. Non che non siano valide, ma ho trovato più sicurezza e familiarità nel raccontare la storia di Basil.
Dato che i personaggi sono due ragazzi, non ci sono qui i problemi e le trasgressioni degli adulti nei romanzi. C'è ancora tanta innocenza e voglia di conoscere il mondo e divertirsi. Ancora. Per ora.

"The Basil and Josephine Stories" are two short stories' collection about the sentimental education of the two characters that, even if it was in Scott's will, never met each other.
The author Wrote it in 1928, after The Great Gatsby. In his intention, they would have to flow together in a novel, instead of being two collection by themselves.
We follow Basil and Josephine's lives until they are 17 years old, their sentimental and emotive growth, their affairs, their friendships. What's different, and here Scott will forgive me, the depth of psychological exploration. Maybe the author, as a man, knows better Basil's mind. Basil's character is more specified, more "comparable". Josephine's story is more stereotyped, as if for outlining it he used stories told to him by other people. They are valuable, but there is more certainty and familiarity in telling Basil's story.
Forasmuch as the two main characters are very young, in here the reader can't find the struggles and transgression of adult characters from the novels. So far there is innocence and the will to know the world and have fun.
