I've read enthusiastic reviews of this book and as soon as I could I picked it up and read it.
I have to be honest, initially it seemed verbose and heavy, and I even thought of abandoning it. But then I decided to continue reading without preconceptions, just letting the author tell me a story.
And I was right to trust, because it's a book worthy of the Premio Strega nomination.
Ida returns home to Messina, recalled by her mother who wants to put in order and empty the house for a future sale. A house from which it is recalled but from which it has always tried to escape, both physically and mentally, above all because the depression and the disappearance of her father. A journey in itself and in memories, to move forward, let go of the past and find yourself.
A book that is sometimes brutal, very sincere, always poetic. And it is perhaps this weight that has almost led me to abandon it.
I believe the conflict with the mother is one of the best parts of the book, better expressed, very honest and sincere, seen only on the side of a daughter who is also a human being and cannot totally put herself in her mother's shoes and understand her. Everyone lives the life to the best they can.
Highly recommended book, and I cheer for future awards.
