Subito dopo aver finito Il Vangelo Secondo Gesù Cristo non potevo non leggere questo Caino. Il Vangelo è un libro talmente bello e profondo che avevo assolutamente bisogno di leggere altro che fosse simile.
In questo caso, la storia raccontata è quella di Caino, partendo dalla cacciata di Adamo ed Eva dal Paradiso Terrestre.
Rispetto al Vangelo, che era più "serio" e profondo, questo è maggiormente scanzonato, con molto più sesso e molto più sarcasmo, sarà anche per il personaggio che consente maggiore libertà.
Caino, cacciato da Dio come punizione per aver ucciso Abele e condannato a girare errante e smarrito nel mondo, con un segno sulla fronte che impedirà a chiunque di ucciderlo, novello Harry Potter. Nel suo girare per il mondo, Caino si ritrova a viaggiare in diversi presenti e a essere testimone di accadimenti come la distruzione di Sodoma e Gomorra, a bloccare la mano di Abramo che sta per sacrificare Isacco, ai piedi della Torre di Babele, sull'arca con Noè. Ovviamente, non aspettatevi un racconto pari pari a quello della Bibbia, perché questa è una riscrittura assolutamente personale dello scrittore portoghese.
Caino ne esce come un personaggio normale, con le sue umane doti e vizi, con una sua razionalità molto umana e pratica... mentre Dio è rappresentato come una divinità poco interessata agli umani, un Dio che sbaglia i conti e che soprattutto non ama certo l'umanità come la amerebbe un Dio Padre.
Forse meno bello e meno intenso rispetto a Il Vangelo ma stiamo sempre parlando di Saramago, quindi comunque sempre un libro di altissima qualità.

Immediately after finishing The Gospel According to Jesus Christ, I couldn't help but read this Cain. The Gospel is such a beautiful and deep book that I absolutely needed to read anything else that was similar.
In this case, the story is that of Cain, starting from the expulsion of Adam and Eve from Paradise.
Compared to the Gospel, which was more "serious" and deep, this is more light-hearted, with much more sex and much more sarcasm, probably because the character who allows more freedom.
Cain, expelled by God as punishment for killing Abel and sentenced to go wandering and lost in the world, with a mark on his forehead that will prevent anyone from killing him, kind of Harry Potter. As he travels around the world, Cain finds himself traveling in different moments of Biblical history and witnessing events such as the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah, blocking the hand of Abraham who is about to sacrifice Isaac, at the foot of the Tower of Babel, on the ark with Noah. Obviously, don't expect a story equal to that of the Bible, because this is an absolutely personal rewrite of the Portuguese writer.
Cain comes out as a normal character, with his human gifts and vices, with his very human and practical rationality... while God is represented as a god not interested in humans, a God who makes mistakes and above all doesn't certainly love the humanity as a God Father would love it.
Perhaps less beautiful and less intense than The Gospel but we are always talking about Saramago, therefore always a book of the highest quality.

Ero già perfettamente cosciente della straordinarietà della scrittura di Saramago, ma devo dire che questo Vangelo è uno dei libri più belli che abbia letto quest'anno. Oserei dire un capolavoro.
Per prima cosa, per tutti coloro che leggeranno questa recensione e vorranno leggerlo, tenete bene in mente che Saramago era ateo convinto e questo libro potrebbe far incazzare qualcuno dei cristiani più ortodossi.
Gesù Cristo non viene narrato nella sua condizione divina ma nella sua condizione umana, bimbo nato da un rapporto sessuale tra una moglie e un marito, uomo che nasce e cresce e sente impulsi e non è sempre buono e misericordioso. Nello stesso modo, Dio viene visto come un padre distante e indifferente a tutto il dolore che provoca e che la morte di suo figlio, e quindi la nascita della religione cristiana, porterà nel futuro. C'è anche il Diavolo, qui chiamato Pastore, che probabilmente tra i tre è quello che tenta il gesto più nobile in assoluto.
I protagonisti del Vangelo ci sono anche in questo libro, Maria la madre di Dio, Maria di Magdala, Giuda Iscariota, Ponzio Pilato... ma ognuno di loro visti in una dimensione terrena. C'è anche l'angelo annunciatore, molto diverso da come lo conosciamo, particolarmente sgarbato con chi, normalmente, avrebbe bisogno di qualche spiegazione in più.
I fatti narrati sono diversi da quelli canonici che noi cresciuti nella religione cattolica abbiamo sempre sentito, ma da un certo punto di vista sono quasi più credibili, più accettabili. Per esempio, il fatto che Maria e Giuseppe abbiano avuto altri figli dopo Gesù, che Maria avesse una normale incredulità quando Gesù le rivela di essere il figlio di Dio, che i pescatori dopo essersi resi conto del "dono" di Gesù lo vogliano con loro spesso per avere sempre reti piene.
Saramago qui ci apre gli occhi sulle incoerenze della religione e del racconto del Vangelo, ci dà spunti di riflessione che adesso, dopo averlo letto, mi sembrano assolutamente scontati e mi chiedo come mai non li abbia mai colti prima.
Direi che questo libro è stata un'illuminazione, un libro intelligente, un libro incredibilmente umano.

I was already perfectly aware of the extraordinary nature of Saramago's writing, but I must say that this Gospel is one of the most beautiful books I have read this year. I would dare to say a masterpiece.
First, for all who will read this review and want to read it, keep in mind that Saramago was an atheist and this book could piss off some of the more orthodox Christians.
Jesus Christ isn't pictured in his divine condition but in his human condition, a child born from a sexual relationship between a wife and a husband, a man who is born and grows and feels impulses and is not always good and merciful. Likewise, God is seen as a distant and indifferent father to all the pain he causes and the pain that the death of his son, and therefore the birth of the Christian religion, will bring into the future. There is also the Devil, here called the Shepherd, who probably among the three is the one who attempts the noblest gesture of all.
The protagonists of the Gospel are also in this book, Mary the mother of God, Mary of Magdala, Judas Iscariot, Pontius Pilate... but each of them seen in an earthly dimension. There is also the announcing angel, very different from how we know him, particularly rude to those who, normally, would need some more explanation.
The facts narrated are different from the canonical ones that we grew up in the Catholic religion have always heard, but from a certain point of view they are almost more credible, more acceptable. For example, the fact that Mary and Joseph had other children after Jesus, that Mary had normal disbelief when Jesus reveals to her that he is the son of God, that the fishermen after realizing the "gift" of Jesus want him with them often to always have full nets.
Saramago here opens our eyes to the inconsistencies of religion and the story of the Gospel, gives us food for thought that now, after reading it, seems absolutely obvious to me and I wonder why I never caught them before.
I would say this book was an enlightenment, an intelligent book, an incredibly human book.

Come ci comporteremmo se scoprissimo di avere un sosia? Non uno che ci somiglia, ma una persona che è esattamente identica a noi, talmente identica che persino i nostri compagni e i nostri genitori si confonderebbero? Una risposta a questa domanda ce la dà Saramago. Tertuliano Maximo Afonso (sì, si chiama davvero così), tranquillo professore di Storia, per caso guardando un film scopre un attore che è identico a lui in ogni aspetto. Decide così di cercarlo, di scoprire il suo nome, come vivo, curioso di scoprire se sono davvero uguali come sembra. Da questa decisione, la sua vita cambierà. Saramago saggiamente mischia insieme inquietudine e ironia, in un romanzo che è difficile abbandonare fino alla fine. Se a tratti sembra lento, è solo perché, nessuno e centomila, libro di un uomo la cui vita viene cambiata all'improvviso e inesorabilmente da una rivelazione riguardo al proprio corpo, una svolta che porterà avanti un importante riflessione su se stessi e un cambiamento totale nella vita. Per chi non è abituato alla scrittura di Saramago, sembrerà ostico ma ne vale assolutamente la pena!

What would we do if we found out we have a lookalike? Not someone who looks like us, but a person who is exactly the same as us, so identical that even our mates and parents would get confused? Saramago gives us an answer to this question. Tertuliano Maximo Afonso (yes, that's really his name), quiet professor of History, one day by chance watching a movie, discovers an actor who is identical to him. So he decides to look for him, to discover his name, how he is, curious to find out if they are really the same as it seems. From this decision, his life will change.
Saramago wisely mixes restlessness and irony together in a novel that is difficult to abandon until the end. If at times it seems slow, it is only because it is preparing us for what will happen.
It reminded me a lot of One, No One and One Hundred Thousand, a book by a man whose life is suddenly and inexorably changed by a revelation about his body, a turning point that will bring about an important reflection on oneself and a total change in life.
For those not used to Saramago's writing, it will seem difficult but it is absolutely worth it!

The Double

Quando ho comprato questo libro, avevo un'idea molto vaga ma invece per me precisa di quale fosse il tema. Ora che l'ho appena finito, posso dire che non avevo la benchè minima idea di quale fosse il tema reale!
Il libro è diviso in due parti, la prima in cui la voce narrante e protagonista, un Quadrato, ci spiega come è fatta Flatlandia, ci spiega i diversi tipi di abitanti e come la società sia divisa rigorosamente in classi. Nella seconda parte, Quadrato prima sogna l'incontro con Lineolandia, una realtà unidimensionale, e poi da sveglio l'incontro con Sfera, un appartenente a Spaziolandia, quella che potrebbe essere la nostra dimensione, tridimensionale.
Il libro è tutto giocato sulla matematica e sulla geometria, è un gioco intellettuale in cui Abbott inserisce anche una riproduzione della società vittoriana divisa in classi. Devo ammettere che in alcuni passaggi più tecnici, di spiegazione, ho dovuto fare maggiore attenzione per capire il concetto... esattamente con il nostro Quadrato immagino abbia dovuto fare uno sforzo mentale per capire Spaziolandia!
Il libro è davvero molto intelligente e acuto, non sono per niente stupita dal fatto che sia diventato un testo di culto, soprattutto per studenti di matematica! 

Non so bene cosa mi aspettassi da questo romanzo, ma di sicuro ho trovato qualcosa che mi piace. Un romanzo delicato, leggero ma non banale, sul rapporto "magico" tra una nonna e una nipote. E' un libro carino, ma davvero non nel senso di banale, ma un libro che ti lascia un piacevole tepore addosso, come una carezza affettuosa.
Niente di spaventoso, ma una nonna un po' bruxa, come si dice dalle mie parti, che insegna alla nipote il linguaggio della natura e dell'istinto innato, tra una tazza di tè e una puntata a curare l'orto. Si legge velocemente, per stare in quell'atmosfera così carezzevole di cui io sento tanto il bisogno. E' bello leggere queste storie, vorrei che ce ne fossero di più.

I'm not sure what I was hoping to find in this novel, but I've certainly found something I like. A delicate, light but not trivial novel about the "magical" relationship between a grandmother and a granddaughter. It is a nice book, but not really in the sense of banal, but a book that leaves you with a pleasant warmth on you, like an affectionate caress.
Nothing scary, but a somewhat "bruxa" grandmother, as they say in my region, who teaches her granddaughter the language of nature and innate instinct, between a cup of tea and a visit to take care of the garden. It's a quick reading, to be in that soft atmosphere that I feel the need so much. It's nice to read these stories, I wish there were more.

Ultimissimo libro di uno degli scrittori che maggiormente ci fa sognare con le sue storie. Chi meglio di Daniel Pennac avrebbe potuto scrivere di un altro grande sognatore, Federico Fellini? Le storie del regista romagnolo e quelle dello scrittore francese si mischiano in un continuo gioco di sogni, in cui non si capisce mai cosa è reale e cosa è solo una fantasia onirica.
Un libro veloce, si legge in una sera come è capitato a me durante un sabato pigro, ma veloce non perché troppo leggero, ma perché si viene conquistati ancora una volta dalla scrittura e dalla storia, si deve sapere come va a finire e se quello che stiamo leggendo sia vero o no.

Latest book by one of the writers who most makes us dream with his stories. Who better than Daniel Pennac could have written about another great dreamer, Federico Fellini? The stories by the director from Romagna and those by the French writer mix in a game of dreams, in which you never understand what is real and what is only a fantasy.
A quick book, you can read it in one evening as it happened to me during a lazy Saturday, but fast not because it is too light, but because you are conquered once again by writing and history, you must know how it ends and if what we are reading is true or not.

Dopo aver letto The Game, mi ero ritrovata totalmente appassionata di Alessandro Baricco come saggista. Ed ecco perché poi mi ero recata in libreria per leggere questo saggio su come il mondo e la cultura cambiano.
Tutti quanti abbiamo pensato almeno una volta che il nostro mondo stia diventando più imbecille, che non c'è più la musica, la letteratura, l'arte di una volta, che ci stiamo imbarbarendo.
Ebbene, in questo libro Baricco ci spiega come funziona questa mutazione, passando attraverso una storia della musica classica, Internet, il cinema. Soprattutto, ci lascia con l'idea che questa mutazione non è da abbracciare in toto o da rinnegare completamente. Ma è giusto navigarla tenendo la rotta e con buone carte nautiche, ma apprezzando il viaggio e quello che di bello e interessante può uscire.
Spiegazioni chiare ma mai banali, un excursus intelligente e completo seppur breve e spezzettato in piccoli articoli. Il libro, infatti, uscì a puntate su la Repubblica nel 2006, ma è ancora incredibilmente attuale.
Credo che Baricco o lo si ami o lo si odi, non ci sono vie di mezzo. Io adoro questo suo modo di spiegare il presente dando al lettore un quadro generale chiaro.

After the reading of The Game, I found myself totally passionate about Alessandro Baricco as an essayist. And that's why I then went to the bookstore to read this essay on how the world and culture change.
We all have thought at least once that our world is becoming more imbecile, that there is no longer the music, literature, art of the past, that our civilization is declining.
Well, in this book, Baricco explains how this mutation works, through a history of classical music, the Internet, cinema. Above all, it leaves us with the idea that this mutation is not to be fully embraced or completely repudiated. But it is right to navigate it keeping the route and with good nautical charts, appreciating the journey and what beautiful and interesting it can come out.
Clear but never banal explanations, an intelligent and complete excursus albeit short and broken up into small articles. The book, in fact, was published in installments on la Repubblica in 2006, but it is still incredibly relevant today.
I think Baricco is one of those that either you love him or you hate him, there is no middle ground. I love his way of explaining the present by giving the reader a clear general picture.

Avevo bisogno di una lettura leggera, qualcosa che non mi annoiasse e non mettessi in pausa. Avendo letto altri libri di questo autore e apprezzandolo parecchio, ho pensato di dargli una possibilità.
E' stata sicuramente una lettura leggera, forse un po' troppo...
Il personaggio che collega i diversi personaggi è Robin, laureato a Cambridge quattro anni prima e adesso alle prese con la tesi di un dottorato mai finita e probabilmente mai iniziata, ma soprattutto alle prese con un periodo della sua vita di solitudine, di non sapere dove ci si trova e cosa fare, con un futuro completamente incerto di fronte e un passato con una delusione d'amore da cui ancora non riesce ad allontanarsi. L'amore non guasta è quello che non riceve da chi gli sta intorno, anche solo un pizzico basterebbe... ed è l'ennesima delusione personale che lo porta a una scelta estrema.
Il libro è diviso in capitoli intervallati dai racconti di Robin, dove capiamo meglio la sua personalità.
Anche se il tema principe del romanzo è interessante, l'ho trovato un libro fin troppo leggero, non abbastanza approfondito nell'analisi dei personaggi, una storia che rimane superficiale. Diciamo che Coe, soprattutto con la serie della banda dei Brocchi, mi ha abituata a ben altro!

I needed something light to read, something that didn't bore me. Having read other books by this author and appreciating him a lot, I thought I'd give it a chance.
It was certainly a light reading, perhaps a little too much...
The character that connects the others is Robin, who graduated from Cambridge four years ago and is now struggling with the never finished and probably never started thesis of a doctorate, but above all struggling with a period of his life of solitude, of not knowing where we are and what to do, with a completely uncertain future in front of us and a past with a disappointment of love from which he still cannot get away. That touch of love is what he doesn't receive from those around him, even a pinch would be enough... and it is yet another personal disappointment that leads him to an extreme choice.
The book is divided into chapters interspersed with Robin's short stories, where we better understand his personality.
Even if the main theme of the novel is interesting, I found the book too light, not deep enough in the analysis of the characters, a story that remains superficial. Let's say that Coe, especially with the Rotters' Club series, got me used to something better!

 Un breve racconto, ma molto divertente e molto intelligente, come ci ha da sempre abituato Daniel Pennac.
Il dottor Galvan racconta di quella notte in cui, al pronto soccorso, incontra il caso della vita. Un uomo da cui si riesce solo a sapere che "Non mi sento tanto bene", solo questo, e con sintomi vari riconducibili a diverse malattie. Da qui parte il racconto di una notte incredibile, di incontri assurdi, di scene memorabili fino al finale che da solo vale il libro.
Nemmeno cento pagine, si legge in poco tempo anche per il ritmo super serrato, ma memorabile, divertimento assicurato. La penna di Daniel Pennac al suo splendore.

Dr. Galvan tells about the night when, in the emergency room, he meets the case of his life. A man from whom you can only know that "I don't feel so good", just this, and with various symptoms attributable to different diseases. From here starts the story of an incredible night, of absurd encounters, of memorable scenes up to the end that alone is worth the book.
Not even a hundred pages, you can read in a short time also for the super fast pace, but memorable, guaranteed fun. Daniel Pennac's pen in its full glory.
