Il romanzo racconta la storia di Elisha e Stefa, coppia di coniugi divisi dalla guerra. Siamo nel 1939 e Elisha, orologiaio ebreo in Polonia, fugge nella foresta mentre Stefa rimane in città ma anche per lei la guerra sarà presto qualcosa con cui avere a che fare e lottare per sopravvivere. La storia svolge l'arco della vita dei due dopo la separazione a cui sono stati costretti, e la loro vita nel lottare per la sopravvivenza. Altri personaggi gravitano intorno a loro, tra cui spicca Ernest, il segretario di un kibbutz.
La storia è permeata di delicatezza, venata di realismo magico, che contrasta e attenua la crudeltà della guerra, lasciando completo spazio per i sentimenti dei suoi personaggi.
Devo ammettere che ho apprezzato maggiormente la prima e l'ultima parte rispetto a quella di mezzo, probabilmente questo ritmo lento, a lungo andare, mi ha fatto perdere la tenuta di strada.
Leggendo le recensioni, ho scoperto che in realtà il "vero" Amos Oz è diverso, dato che questa è una delle sue prime opere.
Non la boccio completamente, lo stile è splendido e la storia interessante. E lascio spalancata la porta a una prossima lettura.

By heart, probably the first book I've ever read by the Israeli writer. Obviously, for those who love books, it is difficult not to be aware of its existence. I didn't expect anything because I didn't know what to expect.
The novel tells the story of Elisha and Stefa, a married couple divided by war. We are in 1939 and Elisha, a Jewish watchmaker in Poland, escapes into the forest while Stefa remains in the city but also for her the war will soon be something to deal with and fight to survive. The story takes the span of life of the two after the separation they were forced to, and their life in fighting for survival. Other characters gravitate around them, the more interesting of them being Ernest, the secretary of a kibbutz.
The story is permeated with delicacy, tinged with magical realism, which contrasts and attenuates the cruelty of war, leaving complete space for the feelings of the characters.
I have to admit that I appreciated the first and the last part more than the middle one, probably this slow pace, in the long run, made me lose my road holding.
Reading the reviews, I discovered that in reality the "real" Amos Oz is different, since this is one of his first works.
Not completely rejected, the style is splendid and the story interesting. And I leave the door wide open for a next reading.
