La voce narrante è la stessa Christine che, sotto la guida di Ragione, Rettitudine e Giustizia, fonda una città fortificata destinata a residenza di dame di valore, guerriere, poetesse, scienziate, regine, martiri, sante. La città verrà poi regnata dalla donna più di valore di tutte, la Vergine Maria.
Durante la costruzione di questa città, le tre Dame raccontano a Christine esempi eccellenti di virtù di donne, sia intellettualmente sia moralmente.
Ovviamente, non aspettatevi l'uguaglianza tra i sessi come ci aspetteremmo oggi. Ricordiamoci che il libro è datato al 1400, quindi bisogna considerare la moralità di allora. E' vero che ci sono storie di virtù femminili, ma sempre sottolineando che la donna è più debole dell'uomo e che le sue specifiche virtù sono destinate a determinati ambiti. Non facciamoci idee moderne. E' vero che viene detto che le donne possono raggiungere negli studi alti livelli, ma sempre con modestia.
Un proto-femminismo che ai tempi prometteva bene ma che ovviamente era adeguato a quella moralità. Una sfida alla misoginia del Medioevo, degna di assoluto rispetto.
Una lettura molto interessante, sicuramente un libro che ai suoi tempi doveva sembrare una bomba per il mondo delle donne, probabilmente un testo che molti padri e mariti non hanno fatto leggere a quelle già poche donne che sapevano leggere.

One of the most fascinating figures in medieval literature, one of the few women writers who have come to us, a cornerstone of proto-feminist literature. How could I not want to read this book?
The narrative voice is Christine herself who, under the guidance of Reason, Righteousness and Justice, founds a fortified city destined to be the residence of valuable ladies, warriors, poets, scientists, queens, martyrs, saints. The city will then be ruled by the most valuable woman of all, the Virgin Mary.
During the construction of this city, the three Ladies tell Christine excellent examples of virtues of women, both intellectually and morally.
Obviously, don't expect gender equality as we would expect today. Let us remember that the book is dated to the 1400s, so we must consider the morality of that time. It is true that there are stories of feminine virtues, but always stressing that women are weaker than men and that their specific virtues are destined for certain areas. Let's not get modern ideas. It is true that it's said that women can reach high levels in their studies, but always with modesty.
A proto-feminism that at the time was promising but that obviously was adequate to that morality. A challenge to the misogyny of the Middle Ages, worthy of absolute respect.
A very interesting reading, certainly a book that in its time must have looked like a bomb for the world of women, probably a text that many fathers and husbands didn't let read to those few women who could read.
