Whether you love or know little about Philip Roth (if you hate him you've never arrived here), this is a book to read. But what the h*** I'm saying, this is one of the most beautiful biographies / literary critiques in the world!
Claudia Roth Pierpoint personally knew the great author from Newark and in this book tells in parallel his life and his books. How much of his life has been reported in the books, the reason why every single book has been written, what he is talking about and how they have been received by the public and critics. It is one of the most complete books written about him, surpassed only by what he himself wrote about himself.
The style of writing is interesting, I've read it very pleasantly, there are also several moments when one laughs when the author tells of funny moments, in which Roth showed off his irresistible irony. And other times when I thought about how much I miss him and how much I would love having him still among us, to know what he thinks of this disastrous period of the United States and what he would have to say to the president.
Wonderful, read it because such interesting books on characters like Roth are never enough. And because I am sure you will end the reading and immediately you will go to retrieve the entire bibliography, not to interrupt this spiritual bond with him.

I have always considered the Great Britain a homeland, if not geographic, at least a cultural one. I grew up in bread and English novels, my favorite book is by Virginia Woolf, I have just finished the entire bibliography of William Shakespeare, the novels with snobbish and dysfunctional English families are my guilty pleasure. Obviously, the Queen shines bright over all this intellectual landscape.
And that is why the result of the Brexit referendum was a blow to the heart. I felt personally rejected by those I love so much.
I've read a lot about this decision, looking for an explanation of a choice for me incomprehensible. But while I was searching and informing myself, I was not satisfied yet.
This book was the best and most complete explanation of an inexplicable decision.
Jonathan Coe incorporates the characters of The Rotters' Club, the Trotter family, in England between 2010 and 2018. The most developed characters are Benjamin and Lois Trotter, the two brother and sister protagonists of the book mentioned here, and Sophie, the daughter of Lois. Thanks to their stories and those of the people around them, Coe outlines a full portrait of the England in those years, dealing with a world that changes quickly, with multiculturalism, with the advent of new ways of thinking and seeing the world and resistance to these changes. Brexit will influence in their lives, as it has influenced and will increasingly influence reality, out of the fictional narrative.
I devoured this novel, thanks above all to a Saturday entirely dedicated to these pages. The narration is extraordinary, interesting, ironic, with some frankly hilarious moments. Above all, the interweaving of the lives of the various characters and the macro-effects of politics on their lives and on the lives of others is perfect. Moreover, Benjamin and Sophie are two magnificent characters, perfectly described in their psychology, so real that I often had to remind myself that I was reading a novel and not a memoir, and that therefore I could not search Sophie on Instagram to tell her how I'm on her side.
Now, I have to pick up The Rotters' Club, which still lies untouched in the part of the bookshelf dedicated to books that I have yet to read, because I'm not ready to let go of the Trotter family.

I must admit that this reading was the result of the media gossip around the web. Everyone talked about it very well, and I was intrigued. And since I have no problem reading in the original language, I was able to satisfy my curiosity very soon, without having to wait for the Italian translation.
The novel tells the story of Connell and Marianne, since they met in high school until adulthood. They are two very different people, Connell is popular at school but of poor family, while Marianne is of a higher class but is a solitary girl and without friends.
What is the strength of the book is certainly the writing of Rooney, very good as few to tell the alternating events in the intertwining of the lives of the two main characters, their moments of separation and union, their most intimate thoughts, the need for affection, insecurities, tragedies.
It is not a romance from a classic novel, the most romantic romance has no place, while there are all the blackest thoughts of the human soul. It 'a fascinating novel that grabs the reader, but it is not a novel that makes you happy. There is a blanket of depression in all. But at the same time you feel that Rooney is telling you real life, without filters, without artificial embellishments.
A splendid novel, a sharp eye on reality, a magnificent narrator.

The Tempest was defined as probably the last totally Shakespeare's work, followed chronologically only by The Two Noble Kinsmen and the Henry VIII written in collaboration with John Fletcher, and the one that marked his farewell to the theater. The epilogue, in fact, sees Prospero saying goodbye to magic and returning to the normal world, and would mirror the Bardo's farewell to the theater and his return to civil society of Stratford.
Prospero, the protagonist, was the Duke of Milan, whose throne was stolen by his brother Antonio. He and Miranda, the daughter, took refuge in an unspecified island, without servants. Here years later Antonio, the king of Naples Alonso his accomplice, and other dignitaries will be shipwrecked, following a storm unleashed by Prospero himself. The former duke's plan, aided by the Ariel spirit, is brought to fruition, he regains his throne and his daughter is married to Ferdinando, son of Alonso, thus sanctioning the alliance between the two cities.
I would really like to be able to make an accurate review of this text, as for all the texts of Shakespeare that, as you know, is for me one of the main literary reference points, but I could hardly make it worthy. There would really be so much to talk about, from the magic that is the central theme of the work, used by Prospero to make situations happen and maneuver as he pleases. There is a constant attempt to usurp or to recover a kingdom, a continuous struggle for power. There is love that triumphs and the peace that returns among the kingdoms. There is colonialism, incarnated by Caliban, the one to whom Prospero usurped the island's command and who is seen as the ugly and evil foreigner, the son of a witch, with monstrous features.
And from this work is the famous sentence "We are such staff as dreams are made on, and our little life is rounded with a sleep".
If it really was Shakespeare's farewell to the scenes, it could not have been better.
